OT, Advertising An Empty Trailer?

Anyone know if there is a place where I can advertise and empty trailer?

My dad had a thought today. Casey lives in Reedsport OR, and I am in Sandpoint ID. Good 12 - 13 hour drive. I will drive it when I go to see her in a little over a month, but we had the thought, why not haul something there, and haul something back this way, and maybe make money, or at least even get the fuel / wear and tear paid for on the truck, just to go see her?

Insurance / Liability is a whole other issue, and I don't know what it would take, but I've been told to just say flat out, no insurance, provide your own, and just have you truck and trailer insured. Honestly I don't know YET, but I will look into it, but please lets not fire off an insurance / safety discussion, I will look into it.

The question is, does anyone know of a place where a guy can advertise an empty trailer from _____ to ______ and the approx. date (s)??Bryce

I see posts like that on Craigslist. You could post on the Spokane/Tri-cities and Portland Farm and Garden sites you are headed south and then on the Oregon coast section you are headed north. I'd ask for a signed waiver for liability on the load, your lawyer may disagree. How on earth did Casey end up in Reedsport?

Well you could get a partial haul to Lacrosse, rotobaler down and take your disc home to get ready for spring? How deep is the snow up your way? Did you get the three point all working?

If you are hauling for someone where money is exchanges then your insurance rate will be different. Get in an accident and your insurance company might not cover you.
It's kind of like the kid who delivers pizza and puts a Domino's thing on the top of his car and get in an accident and the insurance won't cover him cause he doesn't have commercial insurance. Just something to think about.

Getting paid to transport makes you a commercial hauler. Subject to DOT? DOT numbers on truck, stop at weigh/inspection stations etcetera? IIRC here in NY any combination over 10,000 lbs requires DOT numbers on truck if used commercially. Yes, I have them for my pickup.

As others say, you advertise, you become a commercial carrier, and subjects to all DOT regulations. That alone is a deal breaker.

My truck gets 18+ mpg. Lucky to get 12 mpg pulling an empty trailer on level ground. Even less if trailer if loaded. No way would I want to go over mountains.

Another thing is tire wear. My tires on a two axle trailer dump trailer don't last very long. I don't overload it, but I do push the trailer's 10K limit.

If I'm pulling my 20 ft implement trailer and it's empty, it weigh 3k, it a killer. You don't realize how a small bump turns into a big kick in the butt. If I put a 3k load on trailer, things are much better. The big tires with 90 psi, empty trailer bounces like a basketball every time you go over a bridge. I just hate pulling it empty. My 10km 10 foot dump trailer is a delight empty compared to the 20 ft implement trailer. Both weigh the same empty too. go figure.

Ohhh, interesting plan! :)

Right now we have about 3 feet of snow standing I believe, almost all of that has been powder too, so, that is kind of unusual.

3-Point should be good to go I believe? Got it plummed to the belly pump and all that works, made a straight arm to replace one of those turn buckles, and the neighbor told me to run the other turn buckle until I pull it in half, and we'll deal with it then! :p

Casey has moved there with her mom to continue schooling. She is finishing up her GED Program in the spring (working on it now), and then next fall she has been accepted to start in a 2 year criminal justice program out of CoosBay. So, she is very excited! :)

If you have to pickup a cargo and drop it off it could use up 1/2 day or more of your trip. You might be more comfortable and money ahead to travel in an older (10 year old) car that gets 30 to 40 mpg instead of driving a truck 600 miles each way.

Bryce,

I'm in Reedsport also, Give me a holler when you are here.
Also my brother lives in Vancouver Wa. and is in the process of moving some stuff to Bonners Ferry, I will ask him.

Bryce, Just knowing you on this site, I wouldn't want you to get into trouble. One way you could legally haul some equipment for others is for you to purchase the equipment and haul it as your own. even though the ownership would only be on paper, if there was an accident or just damage to the equipment there would probably be an lawsuit. Be careful and good luck.

Bryce, the thing you better look at as other have stated is the DOT thing. You get caught, crossing state line, hauling for hire, without the proper insurance as a for hire carrier and it's going to cost you far more than you are going to make with the added possibility or everything being impounded and a towing bill. You need to do your homework on this! On another note, as a former adjuster, the "no insurance provide our own" isn't going to stand up in court! You will be liable for any loss! Plus limits of liability may change. So you need to know that the deal is on that. An example is here there is a limit of liability for a personally owned vehicle. There is no limit of liability for a commercial vehicle. So if you would happen to get in a wreck you could be on the hook for far more than your personal vehicle insurance is going to cover. So these things really need to be looked at. You may find that you would just be better off just driving to see her without messing around trying to make a buck. What's more important? Her or a few bucks?

I know you don't want to talk about this part of it but you are a man with man sized responsibilities.

(quoted from post at 07:33:02 01/04/17) I'm starting to think you are right. Just can the whole lowboy idea and drive there!

Believe me, it will mean more to her that you were willing to spend money to see than if you try to get there without it costing you much or even making a small profit. Don't ask me why but even frugal women who will say "you shouldn't" will be happier in the long run if you spend the coin to see them. We don't understand it but it's one of those things you learn along the way.

From previous experience I would not try that in OR the DOT guys at the scales are real difficult sometimes. Don't ask. Been a long time since then. I will not go into OR if I have to cross a scale. I go in either during the night when the little scales like at burns is closed or come in from the north to Pendleton by way of Milton-Freewater From WA. I hate to go to OR unless I have to. Never feel good about OR.
Also there is a PUC deal. There were some changes there but don't remember just what now. Something with the bicycle license plat deal on the bumper.
