Ever paint diamond plate?

Bought brand new truck couple months ago. Yes I will use it to take tractors to plow days and shows. But anyways, kept my old diamond plate toolbox and it is showing its age compared to shiny black truck. Thought about taking back off and polishing, but also thought about paint gloss black, however do not want it peeling off later so was wandering if any one had painted old weathered diamond plate and how it was prepped and how it turned out and how it held up? If painting is not such a good idea what of kind/ type of polish should I use to try and make it look better? Thanks for any input/ideas.

You can get paint to hold IF you wash the plate real good to remove any grease and then wash it with vinegar. It will etch it just a little so the paint will stick.

I have had good luck polishing stainless steel with "Bar Keeper's Friend" Polish.

One of the boys that work for us had one and he was like you wanting to paint it. Instead of vinegar a JD suggested someone had told him to spray it with muriac acid like the brick layers use to clean the brick. He did that and rinsed it off. Paint suck and still looks good.

There is a type pf primer that has an acid in it so as to etch and then stick better then just any pint or primer and I would use that then a regular paint

You Have to etch aluminium to have proper paint adhesion. To paint aircraft we used alodine to secure a proper base for paint adhesion. Turns aluminium a gold color.

I assume you are referring to aluminum diamond plate as opposed to steel. I tried polishing some aluminum diamond plate on fire trucks once or twice. I was probably using Noxon one time and maybe Simichrome another. Neither was worth while, not because the products weren't working, and I think most people recognize them both, but because of the small area between the ridges. I tried a good sized rag wheel but it gone torn up pretty quick.

I used california custom purple metal polish
and deoxider. One bottle is cleaner the
other is polish.ebay has it.there is also a
utube video about it. Made my look like new

I like contrast, so I would probably keep it original by cleaning
and polishing. My favorite polish is Mother's Mag and Aluminum
rim polish. Paste. Easy to use, cleans off easily and works great.
Not cheap, but you don't use much of it either.

Before I put it on new truck I tried mothers mag and aluminum polish but it didn't hardly do anything to which I was surprised. Also trying to get in all the low spots around the diamonds was going to be pretty much impossible. I think I will try some of the other cleaners mentioned before I try painting. I just don't want it to turn out to be white. Back in the day I had a car with aluminium wheels that were pretty sad looking and could not be polished by hand. I got some spray on acid cleaner like is used on aluminum truck beds and it took the grime off but turned them white and I don't want that happening again.

Paint it the way they do airplanes. Prime it with zinc chromate. BTDT Rough it up with a scotchbrite pad. The maroon one.

(quoted from post at 19:19:18 01/02/17) Do you mean muratic acid? Not trying to be a smartbutt just want to be sure?

Do NOT use muriatic acid on aluminum. Doing so will cause your tool box to just sort of disappear right before your very eyes.
