Hoping a pic of a Rockwell axle with seal will show

Have this Rockwell rear steerable axle. There is a bad rubber seal---QUESTION---Is the oil leaking from the- punkin differential---or from the Planateries???

The pic is of the non-leaking rubber seal..

THANKS jOHN THAT shows the front seal--the seals on the back are different==don't know why they would be, but by looking at both they are. Do you have any idea what the tare down would be----I don't know if the oil is from the differential or the planatarie sp.

Look for numbers stamped on the axle housings or on a tag somewhere. Might be a good idea to check with Rockwell to see what axles you have. If you have all the identifying numbers, they should be able to send you parts diagrams and tell you why the seals are different.

Rockwell called the plant one day to say that they had mistakenly shipped us some axles that had the brakes set up for mineral oil instead of brake fluid. Brake fluid would destroy the seals made for mineral oil. The plant had already shipped out machines with some of those axles on. Rockwell sent techs to wherever we had sold machines and changed to brake components over to brake fluid systems, before someone was seriously injured.

The u-joint may be designed to run in lube. So that area maybe have lube in it on purpose. You should be able to see if there are seals between the u-joint cup and cross to seal the needle bearings. Sounds like you need the steering knuckle seal regardless. Might jack it up and check for king pin type play. Old IH Scouts used wet u-joints as did some early Ford 4x4 pickups(not certain on the Fords). Obviously way different than your application.

Used red mn---THANK YOU FOR YOUR INFORMATION. This axle is on a 1963-1964 M R S tractor made in Flora, Mississippi. It was made out of heavy duty military components of that era--maybe earlier. The axle is a Rockwell model PS 251 HX
The oil is leaking out of the center- punken differential-it flows out to near the end of the axle where the wheel rim turns on the axle. This is a 4 wheel steer setup. Guessing there is a knuckle type fitting there. It leaks into the brake area an out of the bottom.

Maybe a picture of the other side where it is leaking would be helpful. From your description I take it as it is leaking from a seal similar to #34 on the diagram John sent you. Which seals against the ball shape section on the end of the axle housings, is that correct? When you say "knuckle type fitting" are you referring to a universal joint? That is what I am talking about, a U-joint on the internal drive shaft or axle stub for the wheel/planetary.
