New Holland Corn Heads

I have a new holland 718 that I cut a small amount of silage with. Probable 15 to 20 acres a year. It currently has a 722 one row head on it. I have been looking for a 2 row head for it and found a 822 here locally that is in good shape and sitting in the dry. I have been told that the 822 heads suck and the 824 is the one to get.

The 822 looks like it is a 2 row version of the 722, and if so what makes them so bad? I have never had a problem with the 722, no corn falls over, doesn't plug, etc. So could I expect the same type performance out of the 822 as the one I have?

I have had both on a 718, and the 824 on a 790. If you look at the 824, you will see
another row of gathering chains below the top ones which hold the stalk. On the 722
and 822, there is only one chain per side. These heads will work fine if the crop is
clean and standing well. Once the cutting discs become worn a bit, they are not as
aggressive and will not cut grass or lodged corn as well. The space below the chains
in the stalk way will fill with grass and cobs and plug the header so the plants will
no longer enter it, but rather be cut off and fall down before the chains grab them.
With the extra row of chains, the stalk way is always kept clean, even in the
messiest most lodged corn....and you will experience that sooner or later. You can
plug an 822 or a 722 in less than 100 feet of lodged and weedy corn, and I can assure
you, that you will have a very hard time plugging a properly adjusted 824 in any
crop. There is a reason why a used 824 is twice the money as a used 822.....and worth
every cent. Ben

I am 100% Deere but the 824 head is the best two row made. I have a friend with a 824 on his Deere 3950 and I am giving thought to doing the same thing. Tom

i have one of both. the 824 is some better, but the 822 will
feed corn in just fine if you keep the rotary knives adjusted
so the grass doesn't clog the stalkway. for the acres you are
talking, i wouldn't be afraid of a decent 822 at all.
