John Deere 70 starter

well good news and bad news finally got the 70 back together had it running about three minutes then she just stop well come to find out the starter lever stayed engaged and locked it up I forgot to put the spring on it to hold it up now the starter is dead what can I expect the damage to be? can the starter be rebuilt or should I just start looking for another one? thank for any advise Howard

Take it apart and look at the armature . Does the arm. have a groove cut in it from the brushes , or has the arm . thrown out the solder from the segments ?

probably not much wrong with it. If it is actually damaged (some doubt) have rebuilt; usually cost less and also oftentimes better quality.

didn't explain my reasoning for ''look for another starter'' If it was bad enough to 'lock up the engine' it probably exploded from overspeed
