I went to a consignment sale last Spring in the rain last spring and saw this enclosed trailer sitting there. It was not on the sale bill so gave it a quick walk around in the rain and went inside to watch the slideshow sale. Ended up buying it for $1700----felt fairly good? They said 5000 lb. axles but I doubted that for it only had 5 bolt wheels, 3500 lb. So now I am in the process of fixing. The right channel iron on the gooseneck was bent and someone tried "fixing" it with reinforcing plates on the sides. What a cobbled mess. I decided to cut all that out and I am going to put a third axle under it so I cut all that out also. I know this is not Osha approved but I used my 7 in. grinder and a chop saw wheel. Works good-Need a good pair of thick leather gloves, ear muffs and eye protection. I am going with the third axle instead of going with heavier axles because the axles now are almost in the center of the trailer and the tractor goes in the back and my Gator goes in the front. It will balance out better. I am open for suggestions on getting every thing SQUARE again. Thanks-------Tee

Tee,

From the looks of it, you're not afraid of some elbow grease!

Keep us posted, looks interesting. I thought I had done a lot to a trailer, but you've got me beat.

How much tractor are you planning on hauling with that thing?

I ask because the decking is at best 3/4" plywood, on light gauge channels spaced 16" on center. Given the overall condition of the rest of the trailer I would not count on the framework being at 100% original strength.

That's only the start of the strength issues he has with this project, some of which are much more
likely to cause failure. I hope he undersatnds that and has a plan to address them.

A 7" grinder, a cutoff wheel, no guard, and thick leather gloves. Seen a guy loose 3 fingers with that combination. Get two 5K axles with the right springs/hardware, and reinforce the floor on that trailer. You should be able to sell all the used 3500 lb stuff pretty easy to recoup some of the money you spent on the two 5K axles (not to mention saving a lot of time, and trouble).

Same here. It is odvious that the safety police type don't do a lot of fabrication and repair. If they did their safty shield would be hanging on a nail on the wall also.

Thanks Loren---Maybe they will go back to watching soap operas petting their kitty by the fire.-----Tee

Most of my grinders have never had the guard on them either, I do have some scars to show for it tho. If you need any advice on the strucural issues you will have with this project don't hesitate to ask and I'll help of I can. There are some pretty significant structural challenges to overcome with this project if you want it to be sound when your done.
