corn storage in my bin

This is my first year storing corn in my bin at home here in Central MN. 2000 bushels of corn, went in at 18.8% moisture when the air temp was about 35 degrees. This bin has an air floor, but no heat, stirrators or any of that stuff, just a fan. I had trouble with my fan, needed the motor replaced, that took about 4 days. Once I got the fan back on and running, the weather had turned much colder, below 0 for about 4 days. I leveled the top of the bin and then let the fan run for this whole 4 day period it was below 0. Then the weather warmed back up to about 32 degrees so I turned the fan off. This was about 10 days ago. I have not run the fan since. I crawled up to the top of the bin yesterday, all seemed well. No funny smell, the corn was cold. I am wondering what kind of maintenance I need to do to keep this corn in condition, and hopefully even dry it a bit. When should I be running the fan? When should I not be running the fan? When should I think about getting the corn out of there?

Run it on low humidity days. Make sure to warm it back up in the spring. I'd probably want it gone before June going in the bin that wet.

Four days would not have dried it much if any. Your running it when it was cold was good. Only do not let it run when it warms up. The 32 should be OK but usually warmer temperatures mean more humid air. I would leave it cold. I do NOT warm up my corn that is stored cold. I know the "educated" guys say to do it. I will take a little sweat on the outside of the bin over hot spots and bugs. You need to have the corn shipped or fed before late may to early June. When the average daily temps reach 65-70 you need to have it shipped.

This chart gives the potential drying ability of air, based on a combination of temperature and relative humidity.

I put corn that wet in my bins and keep the fans on unless it's raining. Ever few days I probe the corn and test it. Turn fans back on once it's cold and cool it down. Around Thanksgiving time I full a load out if I am not grinding feed out of it. Gives me an idea what shape the corn is in. Never had any spoil yet.

I like to run my bin fans on days when it is about 0 out and "freeze" the corn also. I never run the fans again. The corn is already dry. Comes out in May cold as ice.

How big is the bin and the fan, and how deep is the corn??

The shallower the corn, the less likely you will have issues. With the corn as wet as it is, I'd suggest you run the fan at least once a week. Cooling it down was a great thing to do, but I would try to keep it more or less the temp of outside air, within reason. Watch the weather, and pick dry days. THe warming and cooling will help take a little moisture out. not a lot, but it will help.

And I'd suggest you have it gone by April at that moisture.
