Corn not yet combined

Merry Christmas Eve. Is there a point when a standing ear corn crop starts losing value? The ground I rented out still has
the corn standing. Last year the rent or combined in Nov. He's left it on the neighbors land also. Could this be in field
storage? Guess the thing to do is call him and ask what's up. What do you all think?

It started losing the value the day it got ripe. Every day, a little more is lost to the weather, wildlife, etc. As other fields around it get harvested, and as winter sets in, it becvomes more and more of a wildlife target.

And while it is getting drier out there, the total harvestable mass is shrinking.

It could be he has nowhere to store it???

One guy I know put up high moisture corn leaving it till there was a way of getting it up with some moisture in it he only did it until he got more storage. One other question is how is your rent set up? A trick used by a few slick operators was put in winter wheat that way they could keep the rent next year if they don't have the crop off you might have to rent to him next year.

Well that sounds better than crop share at this point, but Christmas eve, and no income from your property in 2016? Not good. I assume you have expenses(tax) on this property?

Well Connie Moonie has the fact on the value/loss of the corn itself. The normal rent payment schedule around here is Nov. 1st regardless if the crop has been harvested. You did not say where you at but I would be talking to the tenant ASAP. IF he has been habitually late then I would be looking for another tenant. The crop standing or not really has nothing to do with you IF he has the rent paid.

The renter is taking a big gamble by leaving it stand. Between the wind and snow blowing it down and the wildlife knocking it down he's losing bushels everyday. Its not out of line for you to get half of the rent in march and the other half the first of november. Some get all their cash rent on the first of march. If it does'nt suit you how things are going now, you have full control, there is a list 1 mile long of people that want to rent ground here.Make a call and ask questions.

chris, i'm not too far from you. i have corn standing to combine, too. i'm not very worried about my corn blowing down at this point. i accept that the outside rows will be stripped clean by the wildlife. while it would be nice to have it all done by now, circumstances (my case- 9 weeks in the hospital so far)say that i'll either have to hire it combined @ $50/acre or wait until i can get on my own combine to pick it. i'll wait.
as long as you get your rent, let (pretty sure i know who you rent to) him take the yield loss.

Around here it loses most of it's value when it is inside a turkey and MAN are there a lot of them out there this week! But I am repeating what others have said.

Deers and turkeys both can put a dent in a corn crop. Hunter counted 30 deer on my place earlier this fall, and I saw 40 turkeys on the adjacent place a few days ago. Son and I worked awful hard to put a dentin the deer crop.

I worry to much to do it but have seen others make money letting it dry in the field. We have one neighbor who raises white corn, actually contract delivery in the spring. Always had problems with it being wet in the fall. They don't like white corn dried in a drier around here.

Combined..??? Used to be "Picked"..!!

Bet you believe Pie Are Square, too..???...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS..!!

Some years back I read that after peak harvest time, the average loss rate was about 1 bpa per day. I'm not sure whether that included deer and turkeys.....

Here in this part of Ohio (North western) they say we have the turkeys, but I have never seen a single one. Deer yes once in a while. 35 years ago there were no deer here, I think they imported them at night years ago to get them here as no one would have wanted them. They try to manage the heard so it increases every year, not as many allowed to be taken as are born every year.

We all have seen it work out in a wet fall and low fall prices. The corn drys all winter without significant shrinkage , no drying costs, no storage costs , fewer ruts in the field and sells for more $$$ in the spring.
