cca,s and batt group size

Hey BUS HOG PAPA several days ago there was a discussion on Batt Group size and CCA,S for a JD late(A)and or a JD -60 using 2 SIXES would you add your advise again as to such . As for BATT make i myself prefer INTERSTATE have had very good luck over the years but now going to 2 SIX VOLTS in BOTH tractors , your comments again are WELCOME

I have had both and prefer one 12 volt. The tractor starts better and there are fewer connections for resistance. Every extra cable connection is another place for corrosion and increased resistance. Each 6 volt costs the same as a 12 volt. I don't like any batteries in series. All of my Deere's and IH's that came with two 6 volts now have 2 12 volt batteries. I have had dealer service managers and shade tree mechanics tell me otherwise, but I have also had electrical engineers and automotive electric repair shop people tell me that one single large battery or two in parallel is the way to go. I also can tell which one starts quicker.

I think it was my 4020D with a slim 6 volt battery on each side wired in daisy chain (series) that I made this change:

I built a box on the frame right beside the starter for the new single 12v configuration out of scrap steel, using the nice cutouts JD supplies for implements, and in it mounted a sized 31 (basically a size 27 with ⅜" studs) OTR truck battery I bought from the local OTR truck dealer. Forget the price but it was cheap for what it was as they bought batteries of this size by the pallet (skid). Battery was sealed and 950 CCA.

Leads were under 2' with one Size 00 directly connected to the solenoid input ⅜ terminal and the other connected to the starter mounting bolt with the terminal in contact with the body of the starter.

Guarantee you this is the cheapest way to go and most efficient.

You folls have it figured out. The max amount of CCA possible while keeping the number of batteries and the number of connectons to a minimum. With direct connections and large quality cables/connectors .

We are all free to do what we want but we are also free to give advice. One moderate sized 12 volt will crank it just fine unless you use it in real cold weather. Up until a few years ago I ran two bangers year round, mainly a 630 but also a 51 A. They had two 6's years ago and started very well, but I was always messing with corroded cables. After I switched to one 12 in both tractors the cable corrosion trouble was reduced by 75 percent. There is something about that cross cable between the two batteries that spells trouble. When the 630 was the loader tractor it would start dependably at -20 with one 800 amp battery. I have had lower amp batteries, like 650 amps in the 630 and it would sometimes start at -20 but if there was a hickup I would be out of luck. But that's at -20 for Pete's sake. The 51 A doesn't start quite as well as the 630, maybe because of the 12V coil. I would expect a hot mag to start it better than the distributor but I have no evidence to prove it. Both tractors are fair weather tractors now so I don't have to worry about using a big battery anymore.
