Tractor serial number location.

Hello all. I have been doing some research on my father's tractor. I thought it was a 1948 Ford until I googled serial numbers and it would seem it is a 1947. The only numbers / letters I found on the engine was something that looked like an M then a space and the number 279. Below that was 8N and below that was D. Can anyone explain this to me?

If engine/tractor serial number is not in the expected format, the engine may have been replaced with one from an industrial application, or a factory new block and stamped (oddly) by whoever installed it.

There are casting dated on most of the components of the tractor, look for them and see how the compare... the casting dates will pre-date the assembly date of the tractor by months, maybe up to a year... they'd let the castings "season" for a while and didn't use "just in time" manufacturing, as is done today.

You are on the break even between models. So first question that needs answered is does it have a 4 speed tranny as in 8N or 3 speed tranney as in 2N? The 2N is listed in serial lists as the last 2N being a 47 model and the 8N listed as being a 48 model but they were started to be made in middle of year break for year models like you could have bought a 2017 model car in October of 2016. So you are at the point of determining and letting us now first 3 speed or 4 speed. Then if 4 speed a way to figure if it is one of the first batch made in 47 and sold as a 48 or made later in 48 and sold as a 48. The 8 in 8N designates it as being a model released for 48, the 2 in 2N released in 42 and the 9 in 9N as being released in 39.
