Something Case Did Better Than JD

Don't know how many of you have seen a 4020 with a Case wide front. This is the second one I have had. The JD fronts didn't stand up well under heavy loader use. The Case front end is built much heavier and they turn very short. Also have eight bolt rims. They fit very nice. This 4020 also has a ratty cab this is going in the scrap. I would give it to anyone who wanted it but again it is poor.

Interesting that cab looks very similar to the one on my Ford 8000, wonder if an aftermarket company made them for Deere and Ford

I have seen them before. Worthington Ag Parts sells them modified to fit the original bolster on the 4020. I think they use a 2290 or similar axle. A customer had one on a 4020 that got hit by a passing car as he was turning left off the road. Car hit left front wheel and tore the axle out from under the tractor. Broken spindle was the only damage to the axle. Broke the bolster and steering motor along with cracked frame rails. Kid driving the tractor and girl texting/driving car both walked away from it.

In all fairness, that axle is a fair bit newer than the tractor. Case tractors of that vintage, 930 or 1030, for the most part had 6 bolt hubs and a lighter axle than the one shown. Now, get a front axle from a Deere the same age and size as a Case 2290 and you could compare apples to apples... Ben

Does that front end turn better then a 1175? I had that 1175 and would have took a whole football field to turn around on.

Some 1030s had 8 bolt hubs. I've loaded everything possible with the 1030 and Case 70 loader the last 36 years and haven't broke anything. Lots of square bales and rounds.

On my Case 2290 I had problems breaking rims when it had 6 bolt hubs. I bought used 8 bolt hubs and they went right on the same spindles.

That cured the problem.

These are nice sturdy front ends!!!

I believe Deere forged front ends for IH back in the 70s. The front end were the weak point of that tractor for sure, the 30 series was a lot heavier.

At that time pretty much all cabs were built for the tractor manufacturers by a few independent cab builders. Two that I can think of off hand were Hiniker and Year-Around. I understand that some are still building them.

I have seen at least a dozen 4020's in my area with 1030 axles installed the owners all JD people said they ended their axle issues after installing the 1030 front ends,, I would say that means they are heavier and that is coming from those who bleed Green

Got a Deere wide front end on a 4020 with a 158 loader. Those loaders are rated for 4000 lb. lift and I have had ours there many times. Front end is still in one piece ? so I guess I just don't believe all the rumors about JD front ends being junk.

I agree, I have a 1965 John Deere 4020 and a 158 loader on it since around 1985. Without a doubt I have abused the front end with an excessive amount of weight in the bucket and driving across rough ground does not help either. I did eventually crack the wishbone and replaced it about 1998. I replaced it with an aftermarket wishbone what was much heavier than the original. I do believe that the aftermarket wishbone was modeled after the wishbone from the 1972 model 4020's as I do think they were heavier from the factory?
My wishbone broke because of abuse, not because of design.

I saw a company who retrofitted these Case front axles on other tractors, particularly New Generation Deere tractors. These were touted as very heavy duty and made for using front end loaders. I cannot say we ever had any issues with front ends break apart on our Deere tractors, even those with front end loaders. Back in 1972, I don't know was available out there for front end loaders, but we put WL-40 Westendorf loaders on three different New Generation tractors and never had an issue. That Case front end looks well built. Take a look at the last of the IH tractors (5x88) and their heavy duty front end. I believe that is the front end that was continued for use on the Case IH Magnum tractors.
