DEF freezing up?

Anyone have their DEF tanks freeze up on these newer diesel trucks? I haven't started mine in over a week and just wondering what I can expect when I do.....

The def system is heated and designed to pump empty at shut down to prevent damage. No problems with
that in my truck in 4 winters now.

Yes, DEF can, will, and does freeze up.
That is why all the dispensing units
(pumps) are insulated and or heated in
cold weather. Vehicles have some
method of preventing freezing. You
should not have any problems after you
have it run a bit.

It takes a lot to freeze too, we have a
cage tank kept outside at the shop and
only in prolonged super cold does it
freeze, we bring it inside and thaw it
before transferring it to the barrel we
dispense it from

We have it in a NewHolland,John Deere sales man
told me it will be a nuisance freezing up this is our
3rd winter and in -40 hasn't froze yet

(quoted from post at 12:16:57 12/18/16) Is that one of the noises on my truck after shutdown?

There should a pump that runs after key off to return the DEF in the system back to the tank.

DEF starts to freeze at 12 F and the system is designed to handle that. DEF tanks have volume
above the fill line to allow for freeze expansion and coolant lines running into the tank will thaw
it out for use as the engine warms up. DEF isn't injected into a cold exhaust system anyway so the
emissions control system can't use the DEF until it warms up anyway. As others have said it is
critical that the purge system is operating properly - you should hear the DEF pump run for 30
seconds or so after key-off to ensure that the lines are clear. DEF is not harmed by repeated
freezing and thawing.
