I was a BTO this fall.

I have been working on my 105 combine changing it from gas to diesel and this fall setting it up to do corn with a quick tach feederhouse and a late 444 cornhead with poly snoots. The weather was good so we put the old 435 head on the 95 after finishing soybeans because the 105 was not quite ready yet. These pics show both the 95 and 105 in the same field doing corn. Does having two machines in the field at the same make me a BTO? I sure felt like it. Only problem was not enough wagons and a Deere 550 batch dryer that could not keep up. Tom

One must match or exceed drier out put to combine out put and have the means to keep the combines moving . I know what it took to just keep my tiny little Massey 300 moving in corn and it would amaze you . And only hauling seven miles to the elevator we kept four 16 foot straight trucks moving and two tractors and four wagons in good corn. As that little massey plum would eat corn .
 
They sure were nice looking combines. I don't know what possessed JD to switch over to a MF clone. But when they did, they took over the market here. Then they switched back, and still own the market!

A few years back, in a very wet year, I happened to have one 38 acre field of heavy oats left, which the grass had come up in. Had it sprayed with glyphosate. Finally a day came when it looked like we could get it. The custom operator neighbor was all caught up. So we spent the morning staging trucks and equipment. We cleaned it in short order early that afternoon. One cart running between my combine and his and the trucks. The ground was very soggy and tender, but we got along without sinking in. It was raining again by evening. I had one trailer load that wouldn't fit in my bin, so I sent it home with my help. We were all well rewarded for our efforts. So I was a BTO for an afternoon.
 
Usually with limited help I do 1100 bu per day (two 550 dryer batches). Have wagons enough to hold about 1500 bu. We dry around 10,000 bu per year. I doubt that I will ever have two combines in the field again. Tom
 
I guess I was a bto this fall too, I had one I of the biggest combines made in my fields.

For the 1980s.......

I haul corn to the elevator, it's a mile away, as a one person operation I just don't have time or money to set up a grain storage and drying deal. I didn't get the grain truck out this year, hooked up three sets of wagon pairs, 550bu, 550bu, and 600bu. With the combine full I can have 1900bu sitting on wheels looking at me.......

Altho, after sitting in line at the elevator for over an hour with a load of corn several times this fall, a person starts rethinking that...... Several days it took longer to unload the 6 wagons than it took to fill them.

You would have been a BTO in the sixties when those machines were king of the hill. Think of trying to haul away 500 bushels of corn per hour with flare box wagons if a 105 was running. A 95 and 105 together would possibly put out 900 bushels per hour. Three 350 bushel trucks of the day would be hopping trying to keep up.

My 105 gas averaged 500 bushels per hour with a 635 corn head in 150 bushel corn. I always wondered what it could have done with a 643. The raddle chain was about maxed out for capacity at 500 BPH even with the high speed sprocket if the corn was trashy so I might not have been able to go much faster with a 643.

The combine that harvests my corn is capable of ten times that amount though it usually averages only six times the 500 bushel figure.
 
we only made BTO for a short time. The operators crossed one another and broke the augers off of both. I thought Dad was going to have a stroke! I did learn some new words.
 
What percentage of the guys at the elevator haul with semi's? We haul with either 6 or 8 wagons so we can have from 2000 to 25 bushel on wheels for in the morning once he quits shelling at night.
