What a dope!

I hope the PC police read this before they delete it! I'm talking about myself! So I head out to plow some of this cursed snow today, only the plow tractor will not start. Bit of a problem until I spy the grain truck sitting there still loaded with corn. So I hooks up the cables...but these old chevys have these side connect batteries with the little tiny nubs to hook onto and it is a trial. So I checks ALL my connections and, somehow, switched the ones on the tractor. Then I started playing with the ones on the truck. Big shower of sparks and the battery catches fire. No idea what is going on so I just rip the cables off and start swatting at the battery with my glove all the while the truck is sounding a little weird. Once the fire was out the truck went back to normal and I went back and stared at the tractor. Pretty obvious what I did...so I hooked it up right and started over. So I guess the flaming battery terminals made for better contact...cause the tractor started. Plowed my snow. Filthy weather. 24 degrees when I started, 17 when I left. Wind picking up. Never a dull moment. Never did THAT before! Lucky it didn't blow up in my face!

My Dad did that a couple years ago on the ole' 9n. Good thing the battery was dead dead or it would have blown up. Grandpa comes and checks it out and says, hey, ya know yer battery cables are backwards?

I have a 89 Chevy 3500 with 2 battery's and both side mount and top mount terminals, my friend takes out those stupid little 5/16 nubs I think they are, and puts in a bolt and nut combination for a stud. Much easier to jump off if needed, ill try to get a pic tomorrow, but the truck has snow on it and 18* for a high tomorrow! Glad you stayed safe!

Could be worse it's 1 degree here in Northern,Ill. and blowing snow and will maybe get up to 20 at the end of the week with more snow then back to single digets and minus temps. It's winter.

I'm in N ILL. too, Listen to Monroe Wi. radio about every morning, they said the high a year ago today was 59. Didn't do me much good blowing snow this afternoon in that wind.

I have one that powers my diesel pump and not having the adapter and with the pump having spring loaded clip-0ns (jaws), I did just that and it works just fine. By the way, that's a good place for a sulphated battery that won't start your equipment any longer. They last for years and years. When I hear my pump slowing down, I just charge it back up and good for another 6 months or so.

Jay, - Auto Parts Stores sell top-mount style posts that screw into side-mount batteries. Then you just use the "old style" clamp-on battery cable ends. Makes life much easier when you need to hook on jumper cables.

Yep, that's what I do - get the nut set for depth and then weld it to the bolt! 8)

What I do is spin a nut on a bolt as far as it can go. Then turn the bolt into the battery until it's snug (through the eyelet of the wire first) and then tighten the nut (which would be 'unscrewing' it) until it's snug against the eyelet. I think for the nut I used a 7/16th or 1/2 inch spanner.
