OT - Lost a great dog

I know most of you have lost great dogs; it seems wrong for dogs to live so briefly. Bowie the border collie was 14 1/2 when he went home Saturday. First time in almost 20 years that there are no dogs around. He had a good run and was a tremendous cattle dog right from the start. Loved the cold weather and sleeping on his back. Calling the breeder tomorrow.

Another one of Life's cycles....the older we get the more we have seen...a new Pup will take up where Bowie left off...

"Lassie Come Home" was on Turner Classic Movies yesterday. Never can watch that one without puddlin' up.

Good idea to get another pup, don't have an empty house to remind you of your loss.

We also have lost a lot of good dogs. We can have greater peace over their dying, knowing we took good care of them. Even in their last days. Stan

Steve,

I'm sorry for the loss of your good friend. I've lost many over the years and I know how much disappointment attends every loss.

I read a book one time where the author said, "A righteous man cares for the needs of his animals". That seemed like a good observation to me. I hope you get a new pup soon. He'll be a blessing to you.

Sorry for your loss. My daughter had to put down her 12 year old German Shepherd about six weeks ago. Hit us all hard. My Shepherd is nine, I'm sixty six and have had several dogs come and go. I still prefer the company of dogs to people. Good luck with the pup

I have four dogs. None of them is young. Our Dachsund that lives in the house is well up into her teens now. The two labs outside are 7-8 years old each. And then there is Dottie. Brought to my attention by my youngest daughter. She was found running down the road. Bad skin, very thin. Very sweet. The techs hid her in the back of the clinic for months before the vet caught on and ordered her put down. She is part black lab. I was told she slept all the time and was expected to pass away in a few weeks because of her age and condition. I said she could come to the farm to die and maybe have a couple good weeks because my kid loved her. Six months later and she is getting younger by the day. Loping around the place in the snow. Likes the other dogs, cats, poultry...and they like her. Well, maybe not the poultry. So I guess she belongs here now. Sorry about your loss. Sounds like a good dog.

Sorry for your loss I have lost a few and will be losing another here sometime in the next year or so. Hope you find another one to enjoy. There is so many out there looking for a good home.

Sorry to hear that you lost a partner! It sounds like you are going straight to the factory, to replace him! (going to contact the breeder). I reckon you know, what you like!

We lost a collie and Australian Shepherd mix a few years ago now. She had to be put down, getting hard for her to see, couldn't hear almost hit her a few times and she didn'the even know it, then she started soiling her self when she slept it wasn't her fault but, hated to see her suffer anymore. She was almost 19.

Dang i hate to hear that Steve, I saw the Title of the post and almost didnt want to read. I also have a Border Collie named Belle and actually 14 years 8 months old and I just dont think shes going to make it another couple weeks. Best dog i have ever owned. Just breaks my heart just to type this about her. Sorry to hear about your Border Collie.

Those darn dogs sure find a place in ones heart. A member of the family for sure.
Sincere condolences offered..........

I know how you feel. Our dog got hit on the hiway today. Got to her before she died, but it was too late.

Good luck finding a new dog.

I pray you get every minute you can. Bowie was a fighter to the end. Arthritic, loosing his hearing, loosing his sight, but always ready to go any place I was heading. He just stopped eating and ran out of steam. Tess got to 14 1/2 too. I got Helen at age 9 and she made 13.

'There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent; her eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.'

Lost my black lab on Wednesday after the 4th of July this year. Had to put him down; sure was hard to do. He got to where he could not get up and stand without help. He went through the past 2 winters by sleeping on the back porch during the coldest nights. We could see this coming a couple of years ago and got a red tri-color Australian Shepherd pup for our granddaughter, who lives with us, for Christmas '14. Very lively, as pups are, but, you know, I believe the pup kept him 'young' a little longer! I thought 2 years ago, at times, I would be surprised if he were still alive the next morning. Sure loved that old dog, and, actually, he belonged to my oldest son. never bothered anyone; may have dug up my wife's flowers trying to find some cool dirt to lay in on a hot summers day! Stick it back in the ground and water it and say, "...I don't know what happened to it;I've been watering it trying to get it perked up!!" She knew what had happened......she loved the old dog as much as I did.
Don't we all wish we were as good a person as our dogs thought we were?!?
