Corn's done!

Don't laugh...had fun today! Bright sun when I left this house, snowing sideways when I got to the farm. Wasted ten minutes or so cursing the weather. Hopped on the 4-wheeler and drove back to the last little bit of corn left behind the woods. A couple of detours cause there are more ash trees down on the lane. It was snowing but it was cold and not sticking to the plants. So I fired up the 1660 and headed back. There was enough frost in the ground to keep me on top of it and I took down the last of it in about two hours. Grain truck is filled and sitting in the shed. Put the corn head on it's cart and put it away. Picked up the bean head thinking I would do my one small field of beans. Danged fuzzy pods grab the snow and hold it! Decided not to run that thru the combine. We ended up with nearly an inch when I left and still coming down. That would be snow that was not supposed to be here until midnight Sunday! Anyway...the corn is all inside. A month earlier than last year and I coulda done better if I had a bin....so that is the plan for 2017. :)

Good deal Dave, feels good to be done doesn't it? Especially after the fall we've had, just kept dragging on and on with the rain. We got all of our soybeans finished up today (good thing the one combine has rice and canes on it), and we were able to finish up the largest of 3 corn fields we have left. The elevator wasn't open today, so we have 1,000 bushels of soys in the barn and the 500 bushels of corn that come off the one corn field we finished up. The snow on the corn doesn't usually bother us, but it may if we get 8-10 inches like they say. We really pushed to get the soys done, it sucks trying to push a bean head through the snow lol. Took a long time as it was actually about 30 acres that were the spots we had left by going around the wet spots earlier on this fall. Nice looking beans, but the deer sure had their way with the soys and corn. One field had about 4 acres that didn't have one ear on it, next to some woods. Now just 2 little fields, 2 15 acre corn fields, and we will be done!

Everyone has a different story on the amount. I am hoping a SMALLER number than what is predicted. I was really hoping to get that last 10 acres of beans.

It feels real good. I pulled the truck out and over to the combine. My wife pulled the lever and I did just stood on the side and watched it fill er up. Be glad to get that off to the elevator Monday. I also had acres of corn with next to no ears. Frustrating to drive thru a patch and you can't hear any corn running thru. I finally broke down and leased the back of the place to hunters. Their lease starts Jan 1. Deer and turkeys. I have more than my share of both. Glad to hear you are getting there too!

Just be sure that your hunters want to thin the heard not just trophy hunt.

Congrats on the end of the harvest!

Good going. I hauled hay all day before the snow got deep. I knew I could do that and accomplish something. Wasn't so confident that I could pick corn without destroying something.

Thanks! Glad you got a bunch of round bales off the field! Hauling with the truck is just more comfortable than the tractor. I have done both...I would just as soon use the truck when I can. I'm happy to see that corn inside! I'm hoping things work out and I get a shot at the soybeans in the next month. As you well know, sometimes we get early snow and it melts in a week. Other times it stays until April. I chose to be here, so there is only so much complaining I can justify. :)
