Heated waterers

I use a 1 quart heated plastic bowl for 10 bantam chickens. Water will last one day. The dish has 2 wires crossed over the top so they can't perch on it and soil it.

We have one of those 5 gallon, automatic waters (red and white) for about 30-40 birds. When it starts to cool down, we have one of those red heat bulbs, and we just hang it about 4 feet above the water. Not only does it keep the water from freezing, but it warms the whole house just enough to keep them comfortable. It is 6 x 12 cedar sided little building. Last night it was 12 degrees, and when I was down there this morning it was probably 35-40 in their house. Once it get snows on top it will be a lot better.

Nothing fancy here. Small bucket on a cement block by the entry door. Hang a heat lamp over it. I don't turn it on until its going below 20 degrees. Otherwise I just bust the ice up when I'm walking by or replace the bucket with another if it gets froze to bad. I use a heavy rubber bucket so it doesn't crack in the cold. My chickens are in the Main barn along with the cattle in a fenced in pen so they do get some heat from the cattle being in there although its opened for the cattle to go in and out in one corner.

Hi Steve. Back when I raised laying hens years ago, I used a 9 quart heated pail. The barn cats, dogs and chickens all drank from this pail everyday with no problems. I had to clean/fill it everyday. Chickens are very dirty. I found this pail at Mills Fleet Farm. Not sure what you have for farm stores out your way. Hope this helps. Glad to read Susan is better also.

I use a heated dog bowl. Think it came from Wal-Mart. Then got a thermostat outlet plug from big r. It runs the water heater and lamps, comes on at 20 and turns off at 35 degrees.

Surprised no one has mentioned it, but there are heaters designed for use with the galvanized founts. The ones for chickens look like an upside down galvanized pan you use for oil changes. The ones for pigeon fonts are a little more fancy but just use a light bulb. A 75 watt bulb is all the heat it takes. Make sure you keep it clean. Bacteria love heated water fonts.

I have what Dave posted below, I don't remember why I stoped using it. Then I got a pet water bowl that is blue, works great but the chickens scratch litter into it, now I just rotate water founts. Put one out for them from in the house, bring the one from coop in to the house, basement by the wood stove. It's a pain in the foot keeping them with water, putting bowls on the floor is the worst because they scratch so much litter into the water.

Get one or two Belgian pigeon waterers. They have a cone shaped cover. M ake a box and put a 75 watt bulb in it. Hole in top of box. Place waterer over the hole I have one in my pigeon loft Good to 15 below.

I have used ones like FAWTEEN posted for the last 6 years. We have a dozen banty breed chickens and the waterer when full will last a week. One tip is to have it sit on 2 layers of 4x4 inch wood blocks. Raising it that far above the bedding helps keep the water a lot cleaner. I wouldn't trust hanging them by that little plastic handle. My feeder is hung at about the same height above the bedding and that keeps it a lot cleaner also.
