Scrap yards closing or covering

We have three scrap yards that accept scrap iron. One has moved, and is completely covered. The large one has closed. It would take cars and about anything that else big. That is where I sold all my iron. The third one is still waiting for the ax to fall. The problem here in California is we have people in government that care more about frogs, fish, and crawdads, than the economy, and a clean community. They say stuff leaches off the metal into the ground, and water streams. ( which are very few) In a few years some of your states will follow California. stan

Look at the bright side. That'll leave a few Model Ts around for Californians to pile their stuff on and head for better times in Oklahoma.

We have some Californians moving here to escape the mess of the state government. Once they get here they try to start the same laws and regulations that caused them to leave Cali in the first place.

I wonder what will happen once all the level headed folks like yourself and Mr. Zappe have left Cali.

Count me in, and I promise not to try and fix what is not broke. Our son figured it out 5 years ago so we are likely to follow soon.

There have been some that have closed here in WI too lately. Not because of environmental regs... but because of scrap prices.

metal leaches off and into the ground wow no wonder the state is broke beyond fixing read about the cows eating sea weed you hae some realy smart people out there

They are talking about the oil, grease, anti-freeze, transmission fluid and such on cars. On straight scrap metal I do not know what they would be worried about.

The only constant in this is California and New York are a PAIN in the back side to the rest of the country. I wish that California would join Mexico then both could be screwed up together and leave the rest of us alone.

With Governor Moon Beam what do you expect out of CA. I have been waiting for the state to go broke but it seems that they can still talk some sucker banks and such to keep loaning them money.

The one in Belmont caught fire recently they had a hard time putting it out. They receive the scrap and run it through a shears to cut to size and use an excavator to load it. It was that building that caught fire. They also had problems with the fumes from the fire.

Several here have closed!! they bought when prices were high on scrap iron and failed to prep and sell it before prices took the tumble.

Have the same problem over here in Leon county. People moving in and telling us. How great it is where they just came from. We have asked them. If it is so great why did you leave.

Don't blame all of NY JD. (smile)Put the blame in NY City where it belongs. The rest of the state is good people. We have been trying for years to get rid of the city and make two separate states. Hasn't worked yet though.

The scrap yard I use has very little traffic across the scales.
Many employees got laid off.
Most of their business is from factories that generate scrap and need to get rid of it.

I just heard on the radio our local scrap dealer is offering $150 a ton for scrap next week, rumor is it's going up ,, I have a huge pile of broken parts out back now ..

I have to reinforce Don's comment here. There is not one of us who post here on YT that is from the city of NY and all of us upstaters, wish the city and it's supporters would just float off the east coast and become a sovereign nation.

Must be lucky. The 1 I haul all the n fords to updated their building with a oil burner, so now I don't have to recycle oil or antifreeze as they now take care of that. Scrap Price isn't good but for what I get them for it is still paying.

Hey Don! Can some of us in New Jersey join the upstate New Yorkers? Anywhere within a radius of 50 miles of Manhattan will be New York and the rest of us will redistrict as a new state with a new name.

California is home to about 1 out of 7 people in this country, and accounts for about 20% of the GDP of the entire country. They are the biggest donor state, paying for all the losers in Miss, Ala, and other xxxxholes.

Same here. Prices are so low that most folks don't bother. A friend of mine has a construction biz. He used to separate out all the metal to scrap. He doesn't bother now, just throws it in the dumpster.

Zappe didn't leave Ca. He only moved 185 miles north , that much closer to Gov. Moonbeam and his Bullet train debacle ..

I don't know about your area, but here scrap has gotten so cheap again it could just be that it is not economically feasible to stay open. But it is okay to blame the EPA. after all, who needs clean water, or air, if we can make plenty of money instead.

You must be close to Austin.

That's funny, they guy I haul to won't take the AC's I haul in anymore. Something about not being cast iron and steel, more like cheap pot metal and rust so like when running, no value!

JD: IIRC CA started making them drain all the fluids out of stuff years ago to keep from polluting the ground water. I think there is a hidden agenda with CA now. They would like to get all the older cars and trucks off the road. Close down the places that scrap out those older ones so that used engines and transmissions are no longer available. Old car dies? Off it goes and you are now stuck with buying a new/newer car because you can't affordably fix the old one!

we would like to have that happen hear in il with chicago and collar counties maybe we could get rid of dick durbin and some of the other nutsos at the same time or send them to ca with gov moon beam

I've been required to drain all fluids from vehicles for years, before
they can be accepted for scrap. And I live in Kentucky!

Not true, CA. While they do have a large number of fortune 500 companies ranking #1 in GDP (13.3%) they only rank #10 in Per capita Real Gross Domestic Product and . ND, AK and WY beat them out! Sour grapes cause yer person didn't win? CA pays out over 45.5 billion in welfare! There are no other states even close. Next closest is NY at 18.9 billion! CA also has the highest unemployment rate of any state. So you just take your little self and move on out to your utopia!  CA full welfare rate is over 17 an hour based on a 40 hour week. AR is 5.88, MS 5.69 and AL 11.21. AL and MS combined don't have 10% of the people on welfare that CA has! Toss in AR and you get close to that 10% figure.

Here you have to separate medal so I stock pile it until prices go up. I did
quite well last time scrap was high.

60 Minutes had a segment on last night about a hot-shot industrial development guy that started a steel plant in Mississippi which processed millions of tons of scrap metal per annum. This is an area of that state that had pretty much given up on getting out of poverty. If nnalert can facilitate this kind of job growth and do it on a sustainable basis, I will be first to give him his due (and I am a live-long nnalert)!!
