Admittedly, we keep the house plenty warm in the
winter. Warm enough to hatch a dozen eggs in the
living room, I'm sure. The wife says wood is "free"
(at least to her) so why not keep the downstairs
around 80. Thankfully it's much cooler upstairs or I
would never sleep.

Why is it that the first time it's below 30 degrees
there are dozens of flies in the upstairs windows
buzzing around? It's like something out of a movie.
Big old honkers, too. There's a never ending supply
upstairs until spring. Why do old houses do that?

Open the window and let them out! That's what an older neighbor lady told us once. They were bad in the deer stands this year too, had to open the window and let them out.

If you have window weight pockets they are probably coming into the pocket where the siding meets the window trim. When it is warm inside they come out of the pocket through the rope or chain holes where the pulleys are.

It has been the same here since the first snow also. We have been trying to figure out where they are coming from also. Our 1971 house is tight and well insulated. The flies love the radiant heat in the floors. Seems that we swat several dozen of the pesky critters every day and there are still bunches flying around.

Yes, the vacuum works best. No mess to clean up. I get more flies in the house in winter than in summer. Can't blame them when its -20 outside.

(quoted from post at 14:54:47 12/04/16) google attic fly or cluster fly. also look at university of minnesota extension site link there

yep, cluster flies
My camp with a permanently set house trailer gets them under the right conditions in truly amazing numbers.
Like the others, I use a shopvac to get them.
They are much too big and numerous to splat em everywhere.
lol...it [i:6f1cd6c152]is[/i:6f1cd6c152] just like one of those horror movies.

You got it no new. Had about thirty of them two weeks ago just out of
the blue. Used my Hoover turbo vacuum with the extension wand plugged
into the end of the regular hose. Suuup, thuuup, poooup! Nailed them
right in the air like the movie Karate Kid! Threw the bag cause it
needed to be changed anyway. Neat!

I use to have them but my exterminator sprays the outside of my house every fall, Aug or Sept. No more wither flys.

We always had them in the upstairs in the fall. We were always sure that it had a lot to do with the herd of heifers 50 yards from the house. I would visit my mother and stay over night every few weeks, and in the fall first thing when I arrived I would go upstairs to the room where I slept and vacuum the flies. three or four times and I had them all. They would come in through the spring channels in the windows when it got cold out.
