630 John Deere Fuel tank

Got an old 630 John Deere tractor. Fuel tank has some leaks in the top of the tank from condensation.

Haven't been able to find a used tank.

What are my options to patch the tank??

Thanks for your help.

Find a radiator shop that actually fixes radiators, just had a fuel tank off of a Ford Jubilee that the mount cracked the tank fixed.

Rust holes on top more likely from mouse nests ? Anyhow I have repaired several of them. If it had recent gas in it pull it off and hot pressure wash it out and then dry it out. I always liked to sandblast the tanks outside to clean them up good. If you are sure the gas smell is out of it I then solder them up with acid core solder. A big iron is safest but I use a propane torch. Some co2 into the tank may be a good way to go ? I WILL NOT EVER put exhaust into one AGAIN ! The one I tried that on was the only one I had poof on me. Make sure all gas fumes are out and stay out and let the inlets and outlets open while you solder. You can test for leaks by plugging the holes and then use VERY slight air pressure thru a regulator and put some soapy water on it and look for bubbles.

Mike - I have lost trust in air line regulators. Over the years I've had several fail, and they never fail on the low side, ha. Set the darn thing and look at it later and it's at full tank pressure. I was painting with a brand new one not long ago, and it was acting goofy. I like a bicycle innertube to pressure test something like that, especially radiators. I cut the tube and hose clamp the cut ends to the outlets and air it up until it's three or so inches in diameter. Plenty of pressure for a soap test. I've never tried it, but I'll bet that Bob's idea of adapting a pump-up garden sprayer would work good too for pressurizing light weight (and expensive) tanks.

I guess I don't buy good quality regulators. . .

Bob,

There is a business in Swartz Creek, Michigan called "Gas Tank Renue" that specialize in just that. Whenever we restore any older gasoline tractor the first thing that we do is have them renew the tank.

I usually keep mine right by me as I test to keep an eye on it. I know as I spray paint it drops and when stopping it goes up some so the first air out has more pressure.
