Done with Firewood

Done with my firewood for the year.

18ish cord of 3' long mixed hardwood for my outdoor wood boiler.

Pretty much all standing dead beech, black birch, hickory, oak, maple, ash with some black locust and ironwood mixed in.

It is a 25' X 18 X 4.5-5' pile...it is now tarped and I will clean out hedgerows with dead stuff until the snow comes in and I stop wanting to maneuver around the fields. Then I will start on my pile. I load 3/4 of a cord onto a covered wagon which lasts me a full week. So I move a wagon once a week for the winter.- loading up takes me about an hour start to finish.

Glad to be done...hope to have some leftover and get a head start for next year...someday I will be a year ahead.

You don't have any snow there although we're not that far away from each other. Lots of drifts left here, and ground is totally saturated.
I do my wood in July and Aug, 20 cord this year, lots of reserve, I hope. Usually burn 12-14 cord per year.
I lit my boiler the 19th of Oct and have burned around a cord and a half to date to heat the living area, walk in cellar, and my shop.
I have a Royall wood/coal boiler in my shop hooked to my radiant heating system in the house. Haven't burned a drop of heating oil in the last 6 years.

Nice looking wood pile. Keep at it and you will have a years supply ahead each year. It takes a little time but I enjoy the work involved. Having the right equipment makes it easy.

That looks good, I got about 30 cords from a golf course last spring to share with my brother, I have 7 cords split for this winter, I have burned about a cord so far this season, we got rehired to cut more trees at the golf course, so I loaded my rack truck up with dead locust almost 2 weeks ago, and we will be back for more, I should have wood for awhile.

ACG;
I,like others, live vicariously through your wood setup.
I am in year 8 of myOWB, get a little more streamlined each year.

Snow disappeared completely this weekend. Ground is soaked here too.

Best equip. upgrades for us have been saws. Always had tractors, backhoe and dozers hanging around.

Year 1: Poulin "wild thibg"
Year 2-3; husky 261 (used)
Year 4-7: husky 460 (hardly used when bought)
Year 8-9 husky 562xp.

I think the 562xp is it. Perfect saw for me.

Started using timberline sharpener. Love it.

Propane has been cheap 74 cents last yr and 93 this year. I still like to fire up the saw. My old neighbor told me burn the wood as long as you can then buy the fuel when you are old and don't want to mess with it. He saved what he figured he would have spent I n fuel each year and says he made out ok ok on the deal. He actually told me he wouldn't care if propane went to $5. Lol I like the way he's done it

Nice looking pile of wood. If it were me, I would scrounge some old pallets to stack it on, especially if it is going to last more than a year. Even sitting on the ground, they will last several years. Around me, pallets are free for the taking.

Did pallets for a couple years...as my pile pushes back, I like to pull up to it with tractor/wagon...pallets freeze to the ground and don't want to give up and end up in pieces with nails sticking out...round logs froze to the ground move with a sledgehammer.
