1947 Ford 8n front mount timing.

I have a 47 8n with the front mount dizzy. For the life of me I can not get the timing on it right. It was perfect until the dizzy froze and I had to buy another. I can get the timing very close, but once I touch the adjustment screw it just makes it worst. I tried finding TDC by putting my finger over the #1 cylinder but I still can't get it right. Would getting an electronic ignition help here?

Thanks.

That distributor will only go on in one position, and the adjustment is limited. If you get the wires in the right order, it will be close enough to run.

Getting the points right on those is tricky, but once right it should run. Not uncommon to get "bad out of the box" points and condenser now, everything foreign made aftermarket.

That said, the electronic kits are great! They will make a reliable spark, but only if everything else is right will they work.

As said distributor can only go on one way and if you have it 180 out you have to force it on and that will break parts. You adjust the timing on the front mount while it is off the tractor and if yo udo not have one you need to get an I-T FO-4 manual

I had better results by setting the point gap (by trial and error) with a dwell meter and then setting the timing with a timing light and checking the timing at both "low idle" and full "high idle" (advanced timing setting). The manual is nice and
helpful as mentioned. 8n front mounted distributors can be challenging, in my opinion. Let us know how you complete the task.

Get a good manual, you set the dwell on the bench reinstall and that's it.Simple as can be,you don't adjust anything while it's on the tractor.
