Car engine mounts

I noticed my car, nissan versa, in 1st gear seems to have a lot os slop if it is chugging in traffic. Do motor mounts become weak with age or do they just break when wore out?

Some of the newer stuff even has liquid filled mounts and can leak it out. Not sure what yours has ?

Twice I've had the rubber grommets in the upper dog bone wear out on a Dodge mini van with over 100,000 miles on them. Replacing them was cheap and easy. Get some one to help you and see what is moving.

Don't know what's on a Nissan but could have 2 or 3 mounts and then a strut (dog bone) on the top or bottom to take up the slack when accelerating or going form neutral to reverse. Have some body sit in it, stand on the brake and go drive to reverse, maybe give it a little gas in each gear while you watch.

Usually they wear out, not often they break anymore.

But usually the symptoms are a "thud" you hear when accelerating or decelerating, or an annoying vibration from metal to metal contact when the engine or exhaust makes contact with the body or frame.

You can check them by opening the hood, put it in gear and hold the brake while bringing the power up, and watching the engine. Some movement is normal, but it shouldn't lurch upward.

If what you are describing is more of an engine surging, gaining and loosing power rapidly as the mounts flex, take a look at the rubber plenum between the throttle body and the air cleaner box. If it is loose or ripped down in one of the pleats, it will cause erratic engine surge. It leans the mixture because unmetered air is entering the intake.
