Ring gap do you still need tocheck witha complete set

So I have a 1020 JD that I am rebuilding the engine. New sleeve set new pistons and all. Do you need to check ring gap when you buy a set like this?? I know on car engines you have to just so you do not get a set that will be to tight. I am thinking I will do it but it would save time if I didn't have to

Old: yes yes yes I would check all parts prior to assembly to rule out the wrong size, defective, some one put .40 over in the .10 box etc.

If you would do it on a car why wouldn't you do it on a tractor? An engine is an engine. Unless you want them to fit tight and sieze up. It's up to you...

Old the only time I do not check them is when they come already on the piston and the piston is in the sleeve. On these I just slide the piston down enough to install the wrist pin. All others I check the ring cap.

They probably will be o.k. BUT I always check them too. And I have occasionally found a ring in the set that was too tight-not enough gap. Which is why i check them. . . . Better to take the time now, than regret not doing it later on.

Rings without enough gap bust the ring lands in the piston and may ruin the cylinder too.

On a car or truck engine you do not have sleeves so the bore can varies a lot over time so you have to check ring gap when you put in new rings but on a sleeve type engine one would think the rings where made to fit that sleeve they come with

Ring Gap Table Instructions
1.
This table is in inches. If you are measuring your bore in millimeters, you will need to convert to inches by dividing your bore size by 25.4.
2.
Multiply your inch bore size by the “Bore x” column for your application to determine the end gap.
Example: For the top ring of
an ATV with a 4.0” bore, multiply 4.0 X .004 = .016
Application

Dirt / ATV / Snow / PWC
.0040”
.0050”
High-Performance Street / Strip
.0045”
.0055”
Street-Moderate Turbo / Nitrous
.0050”
.0055”
Late Model Stock
.0050”
.0055”
Circle Track/Drag Race
.0055”
.0060”
Blown Race Only
.0065”
.0070”
Nitrous Race Only
.0070”
.0075”

If they are not within spec you cut one end down a little with your ring grinder.
