Black Friday Report

Wife and daughter headed out the door to go to WalMart and Belk,9:09 EST. We go to a local tree farm this P.M. to get the tree.

There is no amount of savings that makes shopping on Black Friday worthwhile to me. Tried it once years ago - that was enough for me. People are crazy.

I had kids going off to college about 15 to 20 years ago, and each needed a computer (which were pretty spendy in those days). Seemed like black Friday had the best deals on them, so I joined the crush at Wally World to get them. Haven't done it since.
Best part of it was a locally-owned hardware store that had "black Friday light"- Didn't have the hoards of people that the big box stores did, so they had free coffee and donuts, and everybody mostly stood around and talked.

Wife had me brave the battle lines to get some high thread count bedsheets one year because she had to work Black Friday. Never again. Not only that, the sheets were poorer quality than the standard el-cheapo sheets she normally bought. They didn't last as long as the el-cheapos. Most of this Black Friday business is a con anyway. Local Wally-World has 5 (you read that right. 5) of the TV's at the advertised price. No rainchecks, either.

Went through St. Cloud this morning at 5:30 and Fleet Farm parking lot was full from end to end.

I agree it's not worth it. The Internet has just as good of deals as the stores do and no crowds. I was in town on Wednesday and that was enough for me. The wife had to go this morning to finish the loose ends we need for tonight I know she won't be in a great mood and she likes shopping. I really try to avoid town as much as possible from now til after the first of the year.

WE had never been Black Friday shopping and wasn't paying much attention to it. Then the first year we were empty nesters, day after Thanksgiving, we were setting in our empty nest about 8AM, no idea what to do for the day when without thinking about it we decided to go to Fargo to finish up our Christmas shopping. We get to Fargo and it's a zoo!! That's when it hit us! Black Friday! We bought a couple of cups of coffee and went home! Only time in my life I've driven 90 miles for coffee!

Then several years ago I had a VA appointment in St Cloud the day before the release of a new "gaming console", play station or whatever. Cold out. Stopped by the mall for something the wife wanted and there was a line of people with blankets and lawn chairs outside of one store with direct outside access. All waiting for the store to close and reopen so they could be the first to own this new thing. These people breed and VOTE!!

For the most part, especially with regards to things like TV's, iPhones, and other electronic gizmos ....... a case of people (many with the arse out of their pants) spending money (they don't have) on things (they don't need).

I've never gone until today. The boys wanted some tools and Family Farm and Home had a good sale on them. Frankly,I don't see the big deal. In all honesty,Farm and Home had the largest crowd. We went to Wal Mart and JC Penny too. Wal Mart wasn't as busy as a typical Friday. I don't hang out at JCP,but it seemed kind of vacant to me. No excess of traffic or crowded parking lots. Went to BK for lunch. No more people there than usual either, just locals.

Was pretty calm today. Think I have enough stuff, wasn't much I really wanted.

Menards was quite busy, I went 20 minutes after they opened, no carts left.

Runnings was calm after that stop, wonderful to get that 20% gift card on farm stuff that doesn't normally go on sale, really stock up on that stuff.

Sears is a tiny franchise here, mostly appliances and a few tools, I can usually find some tool item to store in my shop for 1/2 off. Not a real busy store.

Walked through Walmart before noon, their parking lot was almost full last night before they opened as we drove by, today was pretty calm, didn't see much in their flier that interested me. Their items weren't even marked well, or at all, seemed very lack luster, but I'm sure it was nuts last night.

Stopped at Hardee's for breakfast some where in between, 35 minutes later they brought my food, wrong order, so had to wait longer. That was disappointing, mistakes happen but they left me wait so long they didn't even realize that my order musta gone to the wrong person and I was left waiting so extra long, person made it sound like the wrong order was my fault but they would fix it..... They weren't even that busy at all. If this is the worst thing that happens to me today I have a good life. :)

Holy cow I better hurry to get in the crowd, I need to fight my way through to get a 1 3/8 bearing for the Meyers spreader before everyone takes them all. Could be dangerous in that little repair shop.

I'm at my daughters house in Evanston, IL. Wife, sister and daughter went to the mall  and then to dinner. Me, I'm gonna stay here, eat leftovers and watch a movie on TV after my "chores" are done. Whenever I visit, my daughter (single, 34) has a "dad's list" ready for me along with her Credit Card. I LOVE spending other people's money. . My only venture out today was to HD to get an entry door to put on her garage. It had Black Friday sales but didn't seem any more crowded than usual. One good thing is they've replaced their flimsy plastic bags with sturdier ones that are reusable. The old ones usually came apart before you got to the parking lot.

I drove about 20 miles to Menard's, got there before 7 am, I found a place to park and got a cart from a lady just leaving. I spent an hour shopping and another hour in line. Never saw anyone mad or even unfriendly, one group of old ladies cut in line ahead of me, but I don't think they even knew it. I did not see anyone I knew, but talked with a dozen or so folks, all pleasant. I got some bargains but nothing I really needed, just a good time, same at several other stores.

We went to Menards, and the only reason was they had a recliner advertised that I liked the looks of. (I've been needing a new one).

I liked the recliner so I bought one, along with some other routine stuff that we could have bought any other day. Stood in the checkout line about twenty minutes.

Other than that, I usually ignore Black Friday.

Internet and 911 has been down on the southern Oregon coast from last night until just now.
Busiest shopping day of the year and nobody could run credit cards, including us, luckily we still had our old "knuckle busters"

Went out at 4pm. Stores were dead, crouds were gone.

Went to tractor supply and got a 5gal bucket of hydraulic fluid for $15 and 4 heavy duty ratchet straps for $7 each. Went to harbor freight and got hteir 1.5ton low profile aluminum racing jack. Light weight and easy to use, perfect for most of my tractors. Plus, how often are you putting 3000lbs on the whole jack. ALso got the 4pack of ratchet straps for $7, I use and abuse them pretty regularly so mine were all ratty.

My wife, however, was out last night until midnight at target, kohls, etc, getting the girls all their clothes half off. I don't understand kohls. $200 bill, and somehow she "saved" $650. I think their numbers are a bit inflated.

I think traditional gift buying trends are changing, especially for the younger generations who opt out more for the experience than the receiving of material gifts. If you think about this, material gifts either wear out or get lost, whereas an experience, such as a vacation with friends, becomes a memory that lasts lifetime....

Where you are at will determine how crazy Black Friday can be. WE are between 2 county seats, one has an Menards the other a home Depot. Both have a "super" Wal Mart. From either one either St Cloud (much larger) or Fargo (larger yet) are an easy drive. So those 2 towns, the county seats are not too bad on Black Friday at all. Both St Cloud and Fargo are zoos. My SIL took my grand daughter Christmas shopping in Fargo. Said he stood in line for 1 1/2 hours in a sporting goods store that you normally have less than a 5 minute wait! But he was off the road this weekend so he got to spend some time with her.
