i have one of these oldfashioned mechanical "floating cork/spindle" fuel gauges and i guess the cork soaked up the etoh and got waterlogged.

how would i repair this best? plastic float? available? dry out and coat it? with what compound?

any good ideas wellcome and thanks in advance

fred

You can get a new brass float through a local Ford auto dealership (or on-line) for $5 and up.

Issue would be if wire float arm passes through plastic float, you would have to modify it to make an open loop to hold the brass float.

GOOGLE "Ford C0AZ-9202-B".

thanks. no: the float rises on a central rod that turns 360 degrees as the float goes up! so this would be a leak!
i was thinking of drying it out and coating with with gas tank sealant....or use a newfangled plastic bottle wine cork left and right. trouble is the water clogged cork floats are heavy! so must somehow dry them/seal them or pry them off.....

I think Gene is on the right track. Bob, I think the gauge style he is talking about is the gas cap style like a riding mower would have. The float slides up a twisted flat piece connecting to the gauge needle. If the sealer doesn't work you may be able to find a similar one from a mower application.
