I ran one for several years digging various jobs but mainly joint utility trench for PG and E, the utility company in the Santa Clara (Silicon) Valley, California, back in the 1970's. Those old 580's were pretty good units, sure, certain things wear out, but there were no really weak,points.....the 188 Diesel engines were real good and quite powerful. Only thing I ever thought about them was the tractor unit itself was a little small,or light to carry the heavy backhoe/loader equipment.......later versions, B's, C's etc., had bigger tractor components. As a part time use tool a "good" 580CK loader/backhoe should be real useful on a farm I would think.....But bear in mind, they are all old and most of them gotta be pretty well worn out by now, so check out them real well for excessive wear in the various joints and links and leaky hydraulic equipment as well as the engine and tractor drive train.

just to correct you a bit a 580B was the excate same chassis and loader as a 580CK the only change is tin work and the over center backhoe, we as a dealer who sold LOTS of backhoes here were involved in the "B: series development,, the "C" and all later machines have a component design and have a frame that the loader is built into and the engine and power train do not carry the work load

You will wonder what you have done without it all these years I use my 580CK almost every day for something great power all around very strong and fast hydraulics and easy to work on,, I use mine for loading bales all kinds of dirt lobs and also in snow removal,, we sold hundreds of these machines from 1966 through 1971 when the "B" series came to be, if that one is equipped with a power shuttle always let it run a few min to get the shuttle warmed up before running it the first time each day,, I start mine and put the shuttle in fwd or rev with trans in "N" this will make the clutch packs last many thousands of hours, couple pics of mine at work in the past weeks,, the cab on mine is for a "B" series as the CK never had a factory cab option, I also have a MOD hitch for mine as well as a backhoe, mine was ordered in as a skip loader with 3pth pto and remote hyd and drawbar
