Marvel Mystery Oil

Every now and then i put some in the gas on my fleet of old tractors. Prolly doesnt do much, but it sure makes me feel better,,,,

MMO is a mixture of Naptha and Mineral oil and a little bit of Chlorinated Hydrocarbon. The Naptha and Mineral oil are both byproducts of oil refining while the Chlorinated Hydrocarbon is a very aggressive solvent. Naptha is the most common ingredient in paint thinner, and Mineral oil is just a light lubricating oil.

I use it in the fuel of air cooled engines that going to be worked hard.I also use it in fuel of pulling tractors.

Marvel Mystery oil contains the following:

Tricresyl phosphate a neurotoxin which can cause a form of delayed neuropathy. Look it up on Wikipedia

Two forms of dichlorobenzene which when burned forms small amounts of hydrochloric acid.

98% is petroleum distillates.

I used to use it, but don't any more because of the tricresyl phosphate and dichlorobenezene.

I've become a believer in using it to free up the cylinders of stuck engines. It works better than anything else I've tried for that purpose. Takes time, but it works.

Originally developed in the 1920 as a fuel additive/cleaner to keep the ancient gasolines from gumming-up carbs and help prevent carbon buildup in combustion chambers/valves etc. Used by the USAF up until the 1960's/70's in the big radial aircraft engines.

Also good for freeing-up stuck engines...fair gun oil...general purpose light household oil.

. I well remember the old man using it way back in the 40's to lube the old mantle clock. Yep the old clock still runs.

It also seems to be the exact fluid supplied by Winona for the valve guide reamers. Comes in a plain can smells exactly like Marvel.

(quoted from post at 07:30:39 11/19/16) Educate me(and others) on the the use of this. I had the post about Sea Foam........

we use it at work on out 40' band saws and the gang saws. use it more often than wd-40.

My homemade penetrating oil mix is ATF, Marvel Mystery oil and Acetone. Cheap to use and it works as good as any of the store bought stuff as far as I can tell.

That same mix freed up the stuck motor on a Farmall in about 2 weeks or so.

Other stuff might do the same but this is [i:7724106f47]My[/i:7724106f47] magic concoction and I'm stickin' to it.

I'm with you smokeEater, I really like Kroil, but a Government study found that a 50-50 mix of atf and actetone would beat any market penetrating oil.

Mind showing the government study numbers? I've never heard of any gov study, just a magazine article from years ago.

The Article that I read was in a magazine called Machinist Workshop. I believe the magazine is now defunct, but iirc the article cited government research. Go to classiczcars.com and the results of the research is shown. search the site for penetrating oil research.
