How many on YT actually use yesterday's tractors?

rusty6 post got me to thinking, How many on YT actually use yesterday's tractors for anything other than a parade tractor?

My favorite tractor was my mom's 1950 Farmall C. It has a 6 ft woods belly mower for mowing. Push snow with it in winter and it pulls a 10K dump trailer to move dirt and mulch.

My 1953 Jubilee also has a 6 ft woods mower. I use it to push snow, grade drives, and pull lawn roller.

They both do a great job as mowers, not to mention use less gas than a riding mower.

I can't find some pics of the Jubilee working.
Please share your pics of your working girls.

Since my 8N is the only tractor I have, yes - I use it regularly. I augered 4 holes yesterday. Last week I pulled an old boat dock out of the lake and drug it up for repair. I grade my private road with the blade, and brush hog 16 ac with it every 6 months.

I'm no farmer by a long stretch but my old beast has always been a worker. One of the best tools I own. I'm thinking now of making my own pull type grader and using the 8N to grade with.

Oliver 1600 for mowing. Case 830 for loader/post holing. Been using an M for hay raking. Sometimes get some of the collectibles out and put on a disk or so to play.

We have one work tractor that sort of qualifies, an allis chalmers 7010. Our other 3 are brand new being about 15 to 20 years old with about 5000 hours each.

52 8N, 51 Case VAC, 42 JD H. All get worked a lot. Will post photos if I get my computer back today from the shop.
Richard in NW SC

I have a '45 M Farmall, a '41 H Farmall, a '51 H Farmall, and a '62 D19 Allis Chalmers. They all have a purpose and they all get used regularly.

JD 1020 on the feed auger wagon, Case 930 on the TMR mixer and feed round bales at feedlot, discing, JD 2520 plant corn, cuts hay, grinds feed with IH 1250 grinder, bushhog, AC 160 bush-hogging, seed pasture, rake hay, box bladeing, post hole digging, haul around chore tractor.

Newest tractor here was built in the 70's.
Closest thing to a parade any of them have seen is when they are all lined up outside the shop getting serviced in the spring.

I use a lot of em!

Farmall Super M, M, H, Super C, and Super A all get used for this and that, but the Super M "Boss" gets called on the most!

Use my TO-30 Ferguson quite a lot, and my Ford 2N plows snow in the winter time, along with a 73 K10 and 74 Ford 4400.

Have the JD B, 40, and dads GM, all get used rarely.

Newest tractor is a 1988 398 Massey.

From there

71 Ford 5000 diesel
69 ford 4000 diesel
68 Ford 5000 diesel
64 Ford 4000 gas
49 Ford 8n

None of them pretty, some get worked more than others, but they all have their jobs

Fred

I use 2 48 8n's for fire wood chores snow plowing and general yard work. landscape raking brush and debris hauling with a carryall box and wood chipping with a 3 pt chipper. My latest is a 1983 ford 1710 4wd with a 770 loader that seams to be taking over some of the chores.

I don't run mine hardly at all anymore. I got spoiled with a newer loader tractor but barely use it either. My lawn mower gets the most use. I think it's a 1991 ?

Between myself and two sons, 1946 Oliver 60, 1954 Oliver 88, 1956 (?) JD 420, 1958 Oliver S88, 1958 Oliver OC-4, 1964 Oliver 1850, 1972 Oliver 1955. Case 430 skid steer (year ?). The two 88's are currently being mechanically refurbished. No paint jobs though, cost to much. Sweetfeet would love the finish on the S88.

It is nice to see the post like these. The fact is even I do use my old tractors for work. I some times take one of them to a car show (why you ask) well just because I am tired of opening car doors or I could be close to a car show but just seating on a classic tractor. Between my six classic farm tractors and my two classic automobiles. I have been caught putting all of them to work. Nothing is safe around my house from work. Most people put there classic automobiles on a trailer to a show. I Drive them there it is more fun to do it.

Since I don't farm any more they don't get used that much. The Farmall B is used to push snow and load some dirt from time to time and buzz saw sees some work. The Allis Chalmers WD45 and the Farmall 450 pull loads of wood around place and go to shows and tractor pulls.
a243041.jpg

a243042.jpg

a243044.jpg

a243046.jpg

I use plenty of them. The Super A is a great mowing tractor with a woods L306 under it. I can mow twice as fast and use half the gas as the lawn mower. Otherwise The super C works well for raking hay, I have a 400 Farmall, 560 and 656 that are used often. The WD45 could use some daylight on it. I also use plenty of modern machines to get the work done as well.

Of the 17 tractors that I own,11 run,and are used on my farm. The newest is 1970 826 hydro, biggest is a 1967 1256.The oldest 'user' is a '45 M that is dedicated to a midmount cultivator. Also included is are two '53 SuperH and SuperM,and my wife's 51 Super C.There is also a '44 JD 'A'that sees a lot of use and 46 Oliver 60. There is my reversed '37 F-12 with loader and the '39 'hotrod' F-12 puller. There are caople othersthat dont get uesed but run.So yes,our farm runs on "yesterdays tractors".

Most all of the tractors we have are used on our beef cattle farm. Everything from the Allis Chalmers B up through the 492 Massey Ferguson mfwd with cab and loader have regular jobs. About the only one that isn't used much for farming is the Massey Harris Pony. Kids still like to get it out and use it around the yard pulling a trailer for smaller jobs.

My '48 8N lives its life attached to a manure spreader that gets dumped once or twice a week, depending on "production" of the contents.

Towing company wanted 400 bucks to move this shed. We hooked the 960 and 640 to it. Drug it across yard! Also use em for bushhogging our place and neighbors. Plow garden disk and use boxblade a ton. We load em up and got to shows (don't even hose em off) folks love to see working tractors. The Allis CA has the head off we working on unsticking motor. And my sons farmall cub is still on trailer, just bought it in KY!

For actual farming and field work, we use tractors from 20 to 50 years old. The oldest models used for haying and other light duty use is 66 years old.

This summer we used as follows: Farmall H & M and 1943 A for mowing. Farmall H & M and Super A for Plowing. Farmall H, M, and C for discing. Second Farmall Super A for cultivating. 1947 Farmall Cub to pull hayride wagon. Left in barn, Farmall F-12 on steel and Farmall F-20.

Absolutely, they get worked here.

Shows/parades were only ever a secondary option.

We have:
1931 Farmall Regular
1935 Farmall F20
1936 John Deere Unstyled B
1953 Case DC3
196? John Deere 4020

Over the years they have been used around here for tillage, planting, harvest, mowing field lanes/ditches, running the corn sheller, elevator, feed grinder, pushing snow, and any other task that comes up.

i have 3 farmalls: Super C, M and a 460. None are parade tractors. My Super C aka Charlie, is my cultivating tractor. he is set up with a full set of mounted side dressers, planters, and cultivators. My M (Molly) and 460 (Mable) are my tillage and chore tractors. Charlie has been painted but Mable and Molly are in their work clothes.

All three are work tractors that put veggies on my table, in the freezer, and in the pantry. they mow, plow, and pull their load. they get dusty, muddy, and git covered with grass and weeds clippings. all three are babied and pampered and got a new barn to park in. They maybe not much to look at, but they All can still plow the mustard.

Don't have a old tractor but love them all specially Green and Yellow ones. This is as close as I've got. I enjoy it a lot but love it when I'm using it as intended. Need something hauled?
a243058.jpg

If I tried to use my tractors in a parade, I'd be escorted off the grounds. One of my 8Ns is used for brush-hogging. One is used for belly mowing. One is used for a rear blade, rear scoop, boom pole and pulling things around. One is on a different property for general pulling trailers, firewood logs, etc. My Farmall Cub is used for belly mowing. No parade tractors here.

I have been using one of my late 30's AC Model M's for the last 20 years. in my disking and mowing business. Not sure if I will continue disking next year. The old tractors just keep going and going. Stan
a243060.jpg

Just have the one Ford 641 and it gets used. I hire out and bush hog, grade driveways, plow gardens, auger holes, etc. People expect a new orange or green/yellow tractor but when I pull up with the 57 year old Ford they love it. Everybody has to look it over and ask questions.

Neither of my two tractors gets any use :-(
I have them (and work on them) mainly for sentimental reasons.

Do they still make tractors LOL. I've got 9 of the old guys. Even if I wanted a newer one I wouldn't get it as they are too complicated to work on. Newer ones sure are handy though.

We don't own any newer tractors on the farm. Never been in a parade either, but would like to someday, or go on a tractor ride. Of approximately 30ish tractors between my dad and I, we use probably 6 or so as our main farm tractors. Many of the others get used for other small tasks, running brush hog or flail mower, our H has a buzz saw on it for cutting firewood, others get used for moving wagons etc, and some just set in the barn most of the time.

This is a fun thread! I use all my old tractors (with the exception of my JD70) almost daily.

My MF35 is the preferred hay mower and tedding tractor. It doesn't get much use in the winter, but I start it regularly nonetheless.
28878784163_4316ca4856_b.jpg

My IH 385 is great for taking, but its primary use is scraping the barnyard and pushing snow whenever we get less than 12".
29443888112_ba4bf2a0ee_b.jpg

My new 856 get used all the time for moving hay and baking. I just bought this big boy this year, and am thrilled with how strong it is!
29519419486_71380dd955_b.jpg

I don't have pictures of the rest of my tractors, but the newest one I own is a Hesston 80-66 DT that I use daily to unroll hay in the field for my cows. My daily driver/chicken feed hauler is a '68 Dodge Dart. It gets driven all the time except during the winter.

30536153050_861dfa4086_b.jpg

My Farmall 350, Deere M, and vintage garden tractors get used frequently around our place. I also do a lot of farm work at our club show grounds with them.

Great thread!

I don't get to use my old tractors nearly as much I as wish I could, but they still get used. The 2n got used for mowing and pulling logs all summer. 961 is still pretty new here but may get into some fall plowing pretty soon.
a243097.jpg

a243099.jpg

'59 961 Ford diesel plants corn in spring, pulls haybine all summer- sometimes don't unhook for 3 months. Wagon hauling or stock chopping in fall.
'59 681D - does garden plowing, hay rake, brush hog, auger grain- put pto in 1000 mode and just let engine idle for the auger-move a lot of grain in that mode on a gallon of fuel, plants beans.
'72 5200d- lighter field work, baling- again may not unhook for weeks, corn picking.
7710- unsure of year, spring field prep, whatever grunt work comes up in summer, grain wagons, fall tillage.
The 681's been in 2 parades, 1 pulling a boy scout float, one our city wanted some area farm tractors in.

A Welger round baler. I thought I had the only one. We have RP 200 with net wrap, processor and the big pickup. I like it but am afraid of getting parts in a few years as nobody at Vermer seems to know anything about them. Tom

If you consider 3020's and 4020's old then 90% of the work here is done with those. We also have a 4230 with cab,4620 and the newest is a 1977 2040 that Dad bought new. Tom

Not very common, that's for sure. My neighbor has the only other one I've ever seen. Mine has about 11000 bales through it, and you're right, Vermeer is really had to get parts from. The only reason I still have it is that there's one older guy at the dealer that had been very knowledgeable about part number crossing from Vermeer back to Welger and vice versa.

My newest piece of equipment is an 1976 TLB. My big tractor is 110 PTO HP, 1967 model. 2 8Ns and a Farm M plus a 1947 D4 7U dozer. None of mine are used in parades or have been to a show sense I've owned em. All are expected to earn their keep!

Rick

I use a 720 row crop Deere to plant corn, pull the picker and bush hog. 720 standard to pull a disk. A couple of B's and a 3010 will get used occasionally if they start.

Newest tractor on this place is a 1980 Massey 255 diesel, Oldest is 52 Alice WD, 57 Ford 960 row crop, 441 Case triple range Ford 860 diesel, 78 Massey 255 high crop diesel w/cab, Massey 165 diesel Massey 202 industrial & we use all of them but now days the 3 Masseys and the Alice get used the most. The 202, the case and the ford 860 don't get used much at all (don't know why, they just don't). The oldest thing on the place I guess would have to be me and I think I'm ready for an over haul. Keith

Super C,504U,830,Super 90,300U,parts of a 8N, and the one that gets used the most is the 656 Hydro. Shoot my lawn mowers were built in the 80s.

Bob, The truck is a '48 GMC 1 ton. Has the original 228 cu. in. inline 6, 4 speed granny gear trans. Built the bed to make a 1 ton dually pickup. Heres a picture the day I brought it home.
a243129.jpg

I use most of my vintage tractors for specialized tasks but no longer use any for the real work.

The 55 860 Ford has a 6' box blade permanently installed with a hydraulic top link. It comes out of the barn when any box blade work is needed, approximately twice each year.

The 51 Sherman combination equipped Ford 8N has a 5' rotary cutter permanently attached. It is used regularly each mowing season to mow the areas that do not look well when mowed with any of my larger mowers.

The 52 Sherman combination equipped 8N (1100+ original hours) is my most used machine. It has a carryall permanently attached within which are chain saws, hand tools, chains, fuel cans, etc. It is used year around as my quad.

I also have a 64 Ford 4000 SOS with a boom pole permanently attached that comes out of the barn on the rare occasion when a boom pole is the proper tool for the job or when I need to install something on the three point such as the post hole digger which is not permanently installed on another tractor. Removing the boom pole is easier than removing other, heavier implements from other tractors.

The 58 Ford 961-5 with trip bucket FEL, which I once used as my crane to move things around, is rarely used these days and is for sale.

All of the real work is done by the 94 Kubota (most satisfying significant purchase of my life) or one of the two new Kubotas (expecting to be the second and third most satisfying significant purchase of my life).

Our 333 Massey rakes a bit of hay and runs the grain augger, that's about all we use our oldest antiques for,

Sweetfeet:

I had an uncle, born in 1902, who never married and stayed at home on the 70 acre "home place" making his living raising tobacco, milking a few cows and raising hay and corn for his cows.

He did this with a Farmall Regular bought new in 1927. The engine was converted to F-20 specs and a trip bucket loader, driven from a hydraulic pump mounted between the clutch and transmission was installed sometime over the years. The steel wheels were replaced with rubber tires when they paved the road past his house in the 1940s.

In the early/mid 1950s, he bought his "big tractor," a 1936 (I believe) F-30. The F-30 was on round spoked rubber all around and was the best F-30 user that I have ever seen. He could crank start either in the dead of winter with his eyes closed.

He used these tractors to make his living until the day he died in 1986.

Dean

Newest tractor on our small farm is a 1974 830 JD 3 cylinder with a 145 loader.

1965 JD 4020 PS
1963 JD 3010
1961 JD 4010 GAS
1953 JD 70
1950 JD A
1941 Ford 9N

None of them are pretty but they are all strait and well maintained. With the exception of the 9N and the 70, they all earn their keep.

'48 Cub gets used regularly during the summer for mowing (used to be our snow plow too but I now have a plow for the truck and haven't mounted the blade on the Cub the past few winters); just used the Jubilee with loader a couple of days ago to move a pile of compost the size of two minivans, it's also the backup tractor for 3pt work when our newer equipment is being serviced or when I don't want to take off whatever's mounted there.

I do have to admit that power steering on newer iron has spoiled me somewhat.

Ferguson TO35 Deluxe, 1960.

Nice enough for an occasional show and parade, but mostly gets used for mowing, some box blade work, post hole digging, moving trailers around.

Everything works, starts and runs perfectly!

Is that a Pettibone SMS? I used one of them once, it's amazing what they'll lift and how the geometry of the boom works. But, they always scared me with all that boom height on those little machines.

.My 53 Super C has done lots of assorted work in the 25 years I've had it, the Super M I don't have much use for. Newest I got is 2 of these 1988 Wheel Horses.
a243136.jpg

a243137.jpg

Yes it is a Pettibone Super 6. Those "little machines" weigh a little over 10 tons so it is quite stable, but I am very careful. I use it at the mill and could remove the mast (one large shaft, couple bolts and quick connectors) but may need it for construction jobs.

'57 MF 50. Mowing, post hole digging, bladeing, dirt moving, plowing, but NO snow plowing here.
a243139.jpg

a243140.jpg

Predecessor to the telehandler, it actually has block forks for Masonary work but I slide them together to use at the mill. Lifts 33 feet and extends forward.

Pettibone machines like that are/were built in Baraga, MI in the UP. They build newer styled machines now, but those were their staple for a long time. They are still in business, but a few years back when the economy was real bad, they had some very hard times, I believe unemployment in the Baraga area was around 40-45%.

42659.jpg

The 43 H is used for mowing with a 6 foot 3 point IH brush cutter, and snow removal in the winter with a 6 foot 3 point blade. . The 51 Cub is used for mowing tall stuff in smaller areas I can not get the H into. The Cub also has a 4 1/2 foot sickle mower for pond banks and road sides.

42660.jpg

The 40 H pulls my trailers around, a 5 foot pull behind brush cutter, and is taken to a local show and parade. The 50 Case VAI is a show tractor. My dad pulled it out of a fence row and rebuilt it. I inherited the Case and both H's from him.

Four tractors, three get used regular. 1936 F-20 hope to have it in front of a plow come spring, 1951 WD, 1958 450 Farmall and a D-19 AC for the big jobs.
a243142.jpg

44 special is on duty 24/7 in front of the generator. The only tractor that will start on those 20 below no hydro days.... Ben

Yep, every day! Just put the Heat Houser on the 1955 Farmall 300, going to be 25 here in the morning and I've got to feed at three places around me plus the home farm. The 1951 John Deere B is run under the shed hooked to the old truck-bed trailer ready to go fetch another jag of wood out of the woodlot, or maybe fix a little fence. I wish I had another one to use, too. Like a super A or a B farmall with a belly mower to mow the lawn with. Ah well, maybe one day. I'm really liking this thread so please everyone keep it up!

Mac

I use my 1951 8N to bush hog, grade my 1/4 mile driveway, move dirt and gravel and move heavy stuff around with a boom pole. It is down now, clutch stuck.
Elmo

All of mine that run get used, And the ones that don't run, I'm working on that and they'll get used too. An A-C C with a 6 ft. woods belly mower does the lawn. Haying gets done with a Farmall M, 706 and an 806. A Ford 1600 is my snow plow/ little chores with 3 pt. (Handy little thing). It and the MF 184-4 with 236 loader are the newest tractors I've got.

I also have a Farmall C that I push snow with in the winter and cultivate with in the summer. I keep looking for a 6 ft. belly mower and haven't found one in my price range. Do you like the belly mower?

Hi. We have about a dozen tractors that we have collected over the years, the oldest is a 1940 the newest is a 1971. They are all Fords and Ferguson's, they all run and get used for something every year. We have no intentions of getting any newer tractors, our tractors have never been in a parade or to a show. We have lots of pictures taken over the years, Here are two.

I have both show tractors and work tractors. All Yesterday's.
As my grandpa used to say, "if it's too good to use, it's too good to have".
The cultivators still fit the BN but haven't been painted.
Garden use only any more for those.
And the Cub got it's face lift finished this year.

Dean,

That's a great story! Thanks for posting it.

A lot of great people with great work ethics have passed. I don't think many today's people can ever match their grit and determination (myself included... my all day computer work can never compare to the work my mom and grandma's did on a daily basis with all the manual housework, cooking, sewing and helping outside on the farm as well).

(quoted from post at 07:35:00 11/18/16) rusty6 post got me to thinking, How many on YT actually use yesterday's tractors for anything other than a parade tractor?

I've got 2 vacs that I use for mowing, marking and plowing snow. I have a VAI with a down-pressure 3-point that is used with a PTO post hole digger and an Oliver 60 fitted with gin poles and an electric winch for various lifting jobs. 8)

I've got a 1968 3500 Ford industrial with a backhoe attachment, a mid 50's 440IC Deere dozer, and an HB212 A/C that I used to mow with.

I've got a bunch of old tractors mostly fords and farmall IH. If I ain't using them I'll send them down the road. They got to earn there keep to stay around here.

Probably like I do. Dedicated tractor to a chore. Had 8 when I was still working for that reason.....Jd 4010, 4020 and 4230C, Ford 2000, 3000 and 4600, MF 35 and 35 deluxe, all diesels except the 4020 and MF 35 deluxe. Saves on coupling and uncoupling old, conventional 3 pt hook up systems. The older you get the more important these things are. I did put a Pat's Quick Hitch on my 3000 which really, really helps to keep it in the active corral which today consists of the 2000 and 3000 Fords and a couple of Bransons, 2400 and 6530C which really spoiled me on ease of hookup. The rest are history after retiring.

I love the belly mower. I made mine into a finish mower. It was an old corn stock chopper.

I put a want ad on YT for 6 ft belly mower. I had many to pick form. I modified the mounting brackets to center the mower.

The Farmall C runs on gas fumes, uses very little gas. I love the way it mows and the smooth ride compared to a riding mower.

Thanks to all who posted. I've enjoyed seeing pics of your Yesterday's Tractors. Especially the working girls getting dirty. Brings back memories of when I was a kid growing up on a dairy farm in N Indiana.

Well with my brother and dad and I we have about a dozen. All work at some time during the year. All red except the 3 green ones 2 are lime green sort of. H,MD,574 with loader,674,806,856,1086,1466,4166. Now for green ones 2940 with loader and MFWD, cougar I and Cougar II ST270 then 2 Caterpillars D-4 Bought new in about 1936 and a #6 traxcavator Or same as a D-6 with a loader on.
The 1086 I need a good rear half or a whole tractor with bad engine. The Cats we have not used in a few years. The one Cougar we are doing the finishing up on the engine transplant. From a 3306 to a 3406. What an ordeal that has become.

1960 MM 335 Industrial tractor with rotary mower. 1950 MM RTU tractor with belly mower. There are used regularly to keep our acreage mowed up. Clint

When I farmed, used an Allis Chalmers WD and WD-45. JD 3020 and 4020. Retired now and have restored a 1941 JD B, 42 Int A and 52 AC CA. Used the AC to seed a hay field.

The newest one that I have is a 1972 Oliver 2255. The rest of the 19 are older to 1930 Twin City 21-32. The one I use the most is 1958 Cockshutt 540.

A 1954 Allis CA, 1965 Ford 2000 do all the work at my place these days with a 1979 Wheel Horse GT helping out as it can. Those tractors may be old but they can still do a heck of a lot of work.

Don't have a pic of the Ford but this is the CA in her work clothes on the day I bought her. When I retire in a couple of years I'm going to add a fresh paint job.

1946 Farmall M, 1950 John Deere A, and 1951 Farmall H all see regular duty on a hobby hay piddle patch operation.

Both farmalls also see bush hog duty as well as grader blade duty with their add on 3 pt hitches.

Even my so called modern load tractor is a 1977 Kubota L285 compact tractor. It is 40 years old.
