Ford 4610 Starting Problem...Electrical???

Hello this is my first post out of desperation. First of all I am not a mechanic by trade but am trying to take a crack at fixing my 1985 For 4610 diesel tractor. I let is sit over the summer and come to find out the mud wasps made a nest around my ignition switch and the only way I could get it to start was trip the solenoid with a screw driver touching the hot lead nut and the connector which terminates the ignition switch wire. I assume since I can "hot wire" it the solenoid and starter are fine. I replaced the ignition switch and it sporadically started a few times but now nothing. At half click the lights would turn on initially but it was weird, they were delayed like 3-4 seconds. Now nothing.....I even ran a direct wire from the ignition switch to the solenoid but nothing. I tested the hot lead to the ignition and get 12v. The accessory lights come on at half click but then go out when I try to turn it over. None of this makes sense to me and was hoping someone might have some recommendations. I greatly appreciate it! :D

Check (and clean) your battery connections and the ground to the engine. If that doesn't solve the problem take the battery in somewhere to be load tested as your battery may be bad.

I agree with RM. Corroded or loose battery cable connection. Check all 4 battery cable ends. If engine won't start then have battery load tested.

Check the simple stuff 1st. In addition to checking the battery and connections, make sure that the PTO lever is disengaged. I know that sounds silly but I've overlooked that myself. Check the wire to the neutral start, it may be corroded or broken.

Check the 'hot lead' to the ignition switch when you try to crank the engine;use a helper if need be.If it loses voltage, and I bet it does, trace it back to its source for voltage when trying to crank.Since you can get to crank by jumping across the starter, battery and cables are OK.Since the dash lights go out when you try to crank, you are losing voltage at or to the switch. It can be just dirty connections at the terminals.Good luck,Mark.

First thing I would check is the cables and ends. If it's got those clamp on replacement ends, fire them away and get good crimp on ends.
Brighten all connections. Second thing I would check is the battery... I had one drive me crazy a couple years ago. It would show full charge
but not deliver any current.... because it's connections were broken internally. THAT is an explosion looking for a home... so be very
careful with it. For curousity's sake, try a good heavy set of jumper cables on the tractor and see if it will start... or if it will start
with a different battery in place. Beyond that.... if it will start with a screwdriver and not off the key.... then you need to look at the
main wiring harness. Those tractors had a fusible link in the main just above the starter and they do sometimes fail. If you get that deep in
sometimes you just have to rip the whole thing apart and find the fault. However, battery cables and the battery would easily be my first go
to, especially those blasted cheap post terminals.
