Cub Lowboy PTO

I have a 1967 Cub Lowboy. I just bought it. It starts right up and sounds good. This tractor has a belly mower. When I attempt to engage the pto to run the mower it bogs the engine down until it dies. Even giving it more throttle does not improve this. Could i have a governor problem? I have a 1956 cub with a drag behind mower. I remember you had to ease the clutch out to get the mower up to speed but the lowboy will not. Any ideas?

Try disconnecting the mower belt, then try the pto again. It could be a frozen spindle or idler on the mower tying things up. If the pto won't turn with the mower disconnected, then look for a frozen bearing on the pto shaft or internal damage in the pto gearing.

Does it have an electric clutch that turns on the PTO?
Many later LOW BOYS did.
Post this down on the Farmall forum.

I just purchased a 154 Lo Boy a couple months back and it does exactly what you describe. I just quickly bump the PTO in and out of engagement a few times then leave it engaged. This allows the deck to pick up speed and not kill the engine.

Never heard a lot of good things about the Lo Boys but for the money it seems to be a pretty decent mower.

And it may be nothing more than a drive belt that is just stiff from setting. You can engage the belt slowly it is a slip belt pulley system.
