Before installing a wire to hydraulic cylinder on dump trailer, I would wait for the sound of the pump to tell me the cylinder is fully extended. Now I can stop it just before.

I know some will want to know why I used electric tape instead of duct tape. Well electrical tape was hanging next to the nut I use.

Works better than expected

No the wire follows the cylinder. Wire is shorter than cylinder. Wire doesnt drag. Benefit is piston won't slam into the end of cylinder.

We used to have a bunk chain on a dump one time to prevent the cylinder from extending out fully,we had a few planks in the frame to catch the chain as the dump went down

Philip d,
I was thinking of using a stoker chain, but saw a device on neighbors new YTM loader. It was a metal rod and a slide tube that was used to tell how much tilt was on front bucket.

I used same idea and made mine out of #9 wire, a nut and electrical tape. When I got done, I bent the end of the wire when it touches the nut.

George, my homemade dump trailer has a cable that pulls the control lever to "hold" position as the cylinders reach full extension. In actuality, it's probably unnecessary, because the engine will eventually die when the cylinders top out. The cable lies on a support when the bed is down.

My trailer is primitive, with an 8hp Briggs for pump power, and manual lever for bed position.

WHAT are you trying to accomplish, George?

There' a few BILLION hydraulic cylinders in the world that get exercised every, dozens or thousands of times, full extend, full retract, yadda yadda, yadda.

So why do you need to monitor yours?
WHAT am I missing here?

I guess it's like this, I did it because I CAN. Like others, I don't like the cylinder hitting the end. My unit is battery powered.

I feel it's better to stop it before it slams the end.

For all of the Naaaaay sayers out there, YES the older cylinders like on my 300U, my dad blew the end out of the bucket cylinder. When the valve handle pops and that means now we stop. No you don 't push it more.

(quoted from post at 10:13:49 11/11/16) I like your ideas Geo. But I'm confused on this one - how does this help? Does the wire carry a signal to the battery shutoff? What kind of sensor is on the wire?
rom what I gather just his eyes. He can see the bent wire as it gets close to the nut he taped to the cylinder and he stops before he dead heads the cylinder and pump hits bypass.
