Got the 12000 lb HF winch mounted on my new trailer. I got the remote that goes with it, added l LED work lights from Northern Tool and wired them to work when I put the transmission in reverse. I made the mounting plate brought a new interstate group 27 marine battery and a solar charger. All in and done give are take a few bucks I have $525 in the deal. That does not include replacing a $100 grinder I overworked cutting the 3/8 plate...

I am not a HF man I use a winch a few times a year so rolled the dice. I mostly loan a trailer out to GOOD customers to haul there cars/trucks to me to work on. I have a tow truck but its hard to find the time to do much towing.

Nice pics Hobo, keep us posted on how it holds up.

Did you wire it so the tow vehicle's battery is tied in parallel?

Nice...Be sure and get a snatch block to double the pull...My 9000 lb HF winch will soon be
10 years old and is still going strong...I stop every 15-30 seconds on a hard pull and let it cool..

I put one of those on my trailer this spring. I have a solar panel bolted to top of tool box to keep battery charged.I also took an old
mailbox and made a cover to weather off it.

I like the mail box I.D. Cool... What I read on the net is HF winch's don't like water I have a cover for a AC machine I plan to convert to cove my winch... Till then a trash bag and a couple bricks will have to do.

Nutter thang the solar charger I picked up is only $14 I am gonna pick up a few to keep the bats in other thangs charged up. I drive my truck maybe once every two weeks it should keep the bat up...

Got a HF 12000 winch on my 1 ton flatbed. Course you realize that is the last time the cable will look like that. I cut some of the cable off
as it is a pain to roll up. Gooseneck hooked up and ran the cable 10' past the rear of the trailer...don't need more than that. People not
familiar with a winch will let it spool up in one spot and have a mess. Guess I wouldn't loan it out. Built a box over mine also.

I have the same HF winch on my new car trailer and have nothing but praise for it. I paid a little extra to have a winch mount built into the trailer at the factory. The winch bolted right up and pulls dead cars and trucks onto the trailer without a grunt or a groan, even with a locked-up wheel or two.

I researched the break away bat last night. The last two trailers I brought they were wired to charge that bat off the running lights. The one I have now they just snipped the battery wire off in the trailer connector so I had to re-do that to charge my winch battery off my truck.

I need to check into that and also get my old trailer back and fix that issue for that guy, I don't remember if I ever took care of this issue on that trailer. When I get time to go back to my new trailer I need to get rid of those damm scotch-lock connectors that should be banned from the face if the earth. When they ran the wires to the tail lights and brakes they blew a hole with a torch for the wires, the holes are RUFF and a short in the making.

I am considering using the winch battery as my break away battery what are your thoughts.

I ran cables to my truck battery and don't need a separate battery for my winch. I tried it both ways with a separate battery and without, no difference.

That's Cool, I just prefer the bat as close as possible to the winch.

I used mine just like it to pull a 1 1/2 ton dead truck
on the trailer this weekend. Worked just like new. I
usually hook a little tractor on it after I unload the
dead item. When I run the winch in it keeps the line
night and tight. Once the winch is rolled in I just
drive the tractor off the trailer. It's the easiest way
when you are by yourself.
