fan clutch on truck

On a 2003 Dakota with 4.7 how much of a job is it to change out the fan clutch? Think mine is giving out, truck started getting hot and fan feels loose according to the one in my 2001 Dakota with 3.9. These are my haulers as well as my everyday drivers.
 
The Dodges I had with a 5.9 gas and the 3.9 gas were pretty easy. They just threaded onto a stub on the water pump. They were regular right hand thread. Probably be best if you had the special tool to hold the water pump pulley from turning. I was able to just stick a large wrench on the fan hub and then give it a few good whacks from a hammer and it loosened right up.
 
Been down this road with a Ford Explorer. Take the radiator out, remove the fan blade. Now thus is where the auto mechanics come in. Take a look in your tool box and take out your air chisel. Put the wide flat blade in and put it against the hub of the clutch. The idea is like you take a cold chisel and wack a nut. Same idea. WARNING you only need to bump it. BRup.. Actually worked slick as could be.
 
I recently had problems with my thermostatically controlled radiator fan clutch. The dynamic viscus dampened disc would move off center at times causing engine vibrations. The rear bearing balls were gone allowing the disc to move off center. This was probably from a previous vehicle lightning strike. I replaced the unit with an electric radiator fan.

One thing. On my truck the fan usually doe not engage much unless I am stopped idling at a light or in slow stop and go city traffic. I had to repeatedly clean out my radiator to completely solve my problems. I also replaced my water pump as the truck had over 170,000 miles on it.

If your gauge is showing hotter while you are moving at 50mph on the highway you may have other problems.
 
Could you do that without removing radiator? Wondering how big a job before I take to garage. 60 mile trip with loaded trailer noticed no problems, let set idling for around 15-20 minutes, check gage light on, temp guage was pegged out. Quarter mile down road temp guage back to closer to normal, continued if kept heater on full blast and blowing as much of the heat out the window as I could (warm day) it stayed just slightly above normal as long as on the road, get to town and slow or stop and it would go back up again. I don't think the water pump would be afected like that if it was going bad. And the fan is loose, not tight like on other truck.

I can't say about a Dakota but I changed the fan clutch on my 1500 with a 4.7 a while back. It wasn't a bad job at all. I had to remove the upper fan shroud and fan blade. I can't remember the wrench size but I believe it was around 1 3/16. A good whack on the wrench with a rubber mallet and it broke loose. About a 30 minute job.
 

While your at it, I would change the thermostat. On mine. it's in the lower radiator hose. Don't get a cheap one, I made that mistake. That isn't a bad job either just a little messy.
 
I did not have to remove the radiator on either truck. Had to remove the top half of the shroud. I was doing the water pumps the first time around and just the fan clutch only on the 5.9 2nd time.
 
It is scheduald to go into garage in town on Tuesday. I just wanted an Idea on how big a job it will be to know if I could wait on it or if I would have to leave it and find someone (hard to do) to pick me up when dropping it off and taking me back to pick up when done. Also time for job to guess how much it is going to cost. Was sure that was problem and a couple of other people have confermed it.
