Just saw a show on the shape of Americas infrastucture,///bridges,waterlines,sewers,dams ,levees, roads,,it was one depressing show for sure,,,very scary Lots of work needed to be done, lots of neglect, eminent danger according to the documentary. It was not a politcal show,,just an older history channel show not related to politics at all to my knowledge

I have seen some of those types of films and most of the time their info is a bit off the line the info they get is questionable as too many times the info comes from a source thats not friendly to the subject you can read between he lines most of the time as see the info is not the whole truth

Some of the highway overpasses here in C MI had, and still might be there, plywood under the overpass to keep the concrete chunks that were falling off, off from the cars going under it. There is a lot of bad infrastructure out there, especially in MI, they let it go too long.

Remember we had a bridge collapse during rush hour in 2007. I think 13 people were killed.

When you see on tractors/machinery how rust will eat away parts or pull some old plumbing pipes and see the rust and corrosion...it does make one wonder. Especially up here in the land of snow, ice, salt. (Also you states along the oceans - since the salt spray/mist from the ocean is corrosive.)

Watching some contractors work on concrete highway bridges over the past few years, seems to take a long time to assess any damage and make repairs. And they have work over top of traffic passing underneath and build some kind of undercarriage to catch falling concrete. That must be awful expensive then multiply that by all of the bridges that need attention.

Maintenance needs to be an ongoing thing, but if you take seriously all of these drama shows, one would wonder if it"s safe to get out of bed each morning. History Channel is not immune to that.

I don't doubt that we need infrastructure improvement. We always have and always will. I do doubt that it is a crisis that is more critical now than it always has been. However, EVERYTHING on the damned history channel is politically slanted toward the dark side.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 2008 Stimulus Money? I am sure most of it got squandered on useless pork belly spending. It should have went to fixing infrastructure.

Most of the money here went to replacing culverts with the new slanted ones. Mostly just wasted money, didn't matter how new or how functional the old ones were.

Money was spent on roads and infrastructure on our middle eastern outposts in places most Americans couldn't find on a map.

With my job being in the road construction industry it's pretty frustrating. Monies that are supposed toward these projects usually end up somewhere else. Not sure if it's like this where you guys live but in western new York for the last bunch of years a lot of corners have been being cut. Very typical to let bids out for paving 10- 15 roads for example instead of doing a complete job on two roads which would include drainage ect. to help correct the problems that are causing the road to fail. Have heard this is in part to keep more people happy and spread the money around. Problem is the roads that were only paved usually only last a couple years where as a full reconstruction lasts much much longer and is a better investment. What I am saying is band aids don't fix broke and the money that is supposed to be there for the work should be. I feel strongly about this as it is how I make my living !

I my part of the world the roads are in better shape than a few years ago, at least for the most part, There are a few bridges being built on US highways that were badly needed. But there is a lot of waste. They built sidewalks on all the new roads. We were told that was a new federal regulation :? . Since they finished the roads a couple of years ago I doubt that I've seen 10 people using the sidewalks and there are miles and miles of them.

I agree money should be spent wisely. Sidewalks in the middle
of nowhere is a waste. I meant items like drainage ect. Also
paving over bad base never lasts. Kinda like painting over
rusty sheet metal. It'll only be shiny so long.

When I live MA I could see the rebar all rusted down to the size of a pencil sticking out of concrete and steel beams with holes through them in the bridges.
What the Verizon commercial that has balloons floating everywhere and take a close look at the bridges it shows. There are still wood pipes in service in the New England area. I use to work construction back there and I saw a lot of scary stuff.

The sorry state of roads and bridges is well-documented here in Michigan. As is the unwillingness of the state legislature to deal with the problem.

Several times a week I drive on a highway that was upgraded with stimulus dollars. That would be Michigan M-59 between Sterling Heights and Auburn Hills in Macomb and Oakland counties. I doubt anyone who uses this heavily-traveled road would consider the 50 million spent on this project "squandered".

Certainly some of the stimulus funds were wasted. That's pretty much the case with the money spent on rural internet access.
