Pics of my mountain trip

I don't go west of Denver often, I think it's been 5 years or so since the last time. I'm frequently amazed at the beauty of our country and this is one of the reasons I like my job. There is something beautiful in every state. With it being a rare treat to go through these mountains I took some pics and I thought you might enjoy some of them. These first ones are in Az headed south on I-15.

These next ones are climbing up to Eisenhour on I-70 west of Denver. The first is the sunrise over the mountains not long after I got going this morning.

Then some from Utah along I-70.

I don't usually take pics while driving, but at this speed not much damage can be done.

First you cross Vail pass at over 10,000 feet.

Then you drop down and have to climb back up to Eisenhower pass.

Eisenhower pass is the highest pass on the interstate system at 11,100+ feet of elevation. Eisenhower tunnel is the highest and longest mountain tunnel at 1.75 miles long.

The ski slope and lift on the east side were up and running.

From there on to Denver it is all down hill and takes all my attention so even tho there were some beautiful sights I didn't get any more pics. Hope you enjoyed these, I certainly enjoyed the drive.

Great pictures thank you for sharing! Reminds me
of the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton Nova Scotia here
in eastern Canada

That tank is just getting broke in good! That gage goes below the line below E before it gets to panic time. Lol. Besides, it was topped off in Nv near Las Vegas, it just goes down fast pullin them hills.

Beautiful Jon. I don't get west of Omaha or Kansas city. Haven't been
through there in almost 40 years.

Lol, my 2000 f250 diesel will show a 1/4 tank of fuel, I go down hill to work and the low fuel light comes on? I put fuel in, and it takes 5 minutes for the gauge to register. My 1999 f150 gas truck does not do the same thing? But my brothers 1999 f250 diesel does the same as my 2000? Odd

Thanks for the pictures, been through that tunnel twice going west, wondered what it would be like climbing the hill east bound in a semi.

Great pix!

I haven't been through there for a few years. I've always enjoyed the stretch from Green River, Utah to Salina, Utah.

I know those roads! Our youngest boy drove concrete pump truck in the area
around Eisenhower pass. He has pictures of the truck on the ski hill (Arapahoe
Basin) pouring concrete bases for those lift towers. Some pretty hairy access
roads with a truck that large and heavy. As you know at times chains are
required on trucks, with the pump truck he would lift the truck up with the
outriggers, put the chains under, let it down hook em up and go while other
truckers would be in and out of trucks ect. to put their chains on.

Nice pictures!! I love going out that way, it's been a few year's. Those first pictures reminds me of what my Dad said about the Grand Canyon. "it would be a hell of a place to hunt for a cow having a calf"

Great pics....We went I-70 west thru Colorado in 1999 and it was awesome..My wife took lots of pictures looking
thru the car windshield...Heres a fantastic picture of the Eisenhower tunnel that I didn't take..

Thanks for the beautiful pics! If I ever retire (5 more years), and in good health, the wife and
I'd love to go out that way. Been all up/down the east coast, but not out west, except one time with
my Daddy on the hog truck to Indiana. Was 12 or 13, (1968 or'69) and all I remember was long,
straight roads (compared to here!) and getting sick with a cold! Times/trucks have sure changed
over the years, got all the info in front of you!

Great pics Jon. I made it up to Colorado twice this year. Folks from your country come down here to escape winter. We go to CO to escape the heat.

Jon, when you were in "Lost Wages", Nv. - why didn't you give me a shout, I'm only about 70 miles West and I'd have gladly popped over "the
hill" (Mt. Charleston) for a meet.

Also, thanks for all of the beautiful pictures. The last time I was in Colorado was back in the mid-1960's when I was stationed at Lowry Air
Force Base in Denver.

Spent 6 years in St George, UT, one of my favorite areas. I used to ride my enduro out on the blm land and overlook I-15 going thru the gorge in AZ. Cars and trucks look like toys from up there! Anyone who has not been west of the Rockies is cheating themselves out of something special!

When I was a kid in the 50's, there was a Mount Eisenhower up here in Alberta, Canada near Banff. I always remember that as being sort of
neat. I see on a web search today there still is one in New Hampshire. The Canadian version was originally Castle Mountain, then changed to
Mt. Eisenhower, now it's Castle Mountain again. I thought that the change back to Castle Mountain was a bit of a slap in the face to
Americans, especially those that choose to spend their tourist dollars up here. Anyways, here's some history on the change .....

The mountain was named in 1858 by James Hector for its castle-like appearance. From 1946 to 1979 it was known as Mount Eisenhower in honour
of the World War II general Dwight D. Eisenhower. Public pressure caused its original name to be restored, but a pinnacle on the southeastern
side of the mountain was named Eisenhower Tower. Located nearby are the remains of Silver City, a 19th-century mining settlement, and the
Castle Mountain Internment Camp in which persons deemed enemy aliens and suspected enemy sympathizers were confined during World War I.

Great Pictures Jon. I have flown over that area many times in a Bonanza and hauled equipment out there when my brother was alive. He had a ranch south of there on highway 50 just west of the Monarch
Pass. I always felt going up the mountain was a piece of cake but coming down was when you were at your full awarement. Thanks for sharing.

Jon. I sure do like all the good pic. I always like the pic. of the big highways in the mountains. I have never been out that for West. Thanks A lot.

Great pictures. Glad you could enjoy the trip. If you're around south central Michigan give me a call 517-617-2391, I'll buy the coffee.

Nice photos, see you already have a half million miles on that Volvo. Should be broke in by now, and I thought when you got it that single axel setup was supposed to be great on fuel. How has it been will you go back to that set up next time.. How does DART do with you bobtail insurance, do they provide it or you have to

I buy my own bt and collision insurance, dart pays everything else. Milage is good, what you see there is what I got pulling a full load in the mountains. It would depend on what I was doing if I woild buy another tag axle. For road driving definately yes, butnot for anything else.

Been thru most of those areas many times, there is some long hard pulls on those roads when you are grossing over 70,000lbs in a semi truck.
