How much to charge for hauling a tractor.

I had a friend come over to my house yesterday. He had bought a farmall F 14 in Fresno Ca and needs it to be hauled to his place. The question is I have never hauled any body's tractor for them. So what is the going rate per mile to haul cross country for a tractor? Thanks Brent.

1- Is he a real friend or just someone you know.
(A friend will post your bail, a real friend will be sitting beside you in the cell saying wow that was a heck of a party)

2- If you are hauling someone else's equipment it may be deemed commercial by DOT, insurance etc.
A bill of sale naming you as the owner might make things a whole bunch easier.

3-Are you going to where the tractor is for another reason or would this be a dedicated trip just for this tractor.

Time off work.
Fuel.
Maintenance and breakdowns on vehicle etc.
Motels, meals.

Going rate will depend on size of hauler, time frame, hot shot need it now or add it to a part load....

A site like U-SHIP will give you an idea of commercial rates.

Figure all your out of pocket expenses then go back to #1 and decide if you are doing this to make a profit or to help a friend.

Hauled one earlier this week. 100 mile round trip. $150.00. Took 4 hours and 15 gallons of gas.

Good Luck.

The big boys get $4 to $5 per loaded mile. A 3/4 ton pickup truck with a gooseneck trailer won't do it for very much less when you factor in wear and tear on the truck, tire wear, insurance and license fees, fuel costs, and food and lodging.

If he is a good friend, do it for the cost of the fuel, but even that will add up to more than what he probably paid for the tractor.

Make it either as just helping a friend with him along or as if it is yours that you just bought but in no way let on you are hauling for hire. If he is a long have him use his card at fuel pump, not yours.

If you would tell us where you live, we would know if this is 20 miles, 200 miles or 2000 miles.

Around here in Tn 3.00 a loaded mile is about right.
Have your friend pick up the tab except for your food so you are not to be considered a bailee for hire which would increase your liability
to your friend for any damage to the tractor. Make sure he loads it and ties it down.

My insurance will not let me haul anything for hire. That is a whole different ballgame. I will deliver things I own to a buyer. I am very lucky if I can get 1.50 per loaded mile. I hire most things hauled and if you can be patient you will get it for even less than that a lot of times. That tractor will take up very little room. I would tell him to hire a trucker.

Boy I'd like to know who the BIG BOYS are that get 4 to 5 bucks a mile. What have you been smoking rustyfarmall?

Maybe for heavy equipment or 20,000# tractors! I try to get around 80 cents if I am running empty in the general area...and they are always "my" tractors :D

If you're not getting at least $4 per loaded mile, you are not putting any money in your pocket.

Okay I got 2.00 to 4.00 a mile that sounds like some thing to go with. If you have a tow truck to do this they charge this. 55.00 a hook and load, and then the miles. A 5 mile tow in the high dessert coast up to 100.00 dollars (that is a tow truck). I am going to have to go get the tractor so I will be unloaded up to Fresno Ca. Than load and bring back to Riverside Ca. The buy wants to pay two hundred dollars for the job (I really do not if I want to agree with it). What do you think is it okay.
