First time things

I like many Farmers and Ranchers alike do things by myself,, I just did a "set-back" of a set of swinging gates yesterday, a first for me,, I think it turned out pretty nice,, the County had built this new by-pass road about 4 years ago,, the contractor who installed the fence did a shoddy job to say the least,, they claimed to have set the corner and gate posts 4' deep,, Yea Right, more like 2 1/2 feet at best,, they were leaning after less than a week,, the gate posts I set are 10 1/2 feet long 9" plus posts,, they are just over four feet deep,, and all hand tamped rather than drove in,, only way to set posts like this in my mind,, anyway this will let us get off the busy roadway to open the gates we have had a few close calls already, I moved the gates in 32 feet by the way

Looks great. Type of job that always seems to get put off but gives great satisfaction when done. And when completed, one generally thinks "why didn't I do that before now". I notice that you have the down pressure cylinder on your digger. Is it plumbed into the remotes or the 3pt hitch? Seem to remember some kind of hook-up with the hitch.....Ron

Dang, Tom - you used one of those new-fangled posthole diggers. Is that playing fair?

Reminds me of a story: An old miner out west had a donkey that died. He was digging a hole to bury the critter and a greenhorn came along and asked, "Digging a post hole?" "Nope", the miner replied.

the down pressure is hooked to the remotes, I sold a good number of these units this one as well, bought it back after the guy quit fencing,, it does help a lot,, but like now and where I dug these it was like concrete so I had to put a bit extra force to get her past the hard pack layer

Case Nutty,

That down force is a great addition to the digger. I have one that does not have down force on it so the digger is only good in the early spring when the ground is still fairly wet from the winter. Mine has a long pole on it that sticks out the back to use for down force, but I do everything by myself so it is of no use to me.

Good looking gate arrangement.

I think that there looks great. I usually get stuck hanging gates up in the city I live in. What I hate is when there kids get on the gates to swing on them (as they are opening them) This usually sets them off and them I get stuck fixing them again.

Casenutty Your fencing job looks Great. I will have to disagree on the hand packed post being tighter than driven posts. On corner/gate post like these I use the post hole auger and dig a six inch hole 3-4 feet deep. Then drive in a 9-10 inch post. That makes a TGHT post that will not sag if the ground is solid where the post sets.

IF you do not have a driver then back fill with 3/4 stone. The post will be much tighter than one filled with dirt. Plus it is easier to fill the hole. Shovel the stone in slow and shake the post as your doing it. Then tamp the rock. Post will be tight as one set in concrete.

are you using these pointed posts? these are a JOKE when I pulled the ones the contractor put in they were just what I said they was 2 feet in the ground,,, and I can not speak for your soil but here I can tamp a post far tighter than a driven one, they do just like you do, drill a smaller hole then drive them,, mine are solid I have been doing this a good while,, my posts always stay the whole 2 miles of this fence will need to be redone as it is all the same,, not deep enough buried to stay like they should a corner or a gate post has to be at least 3 feet deep and 4 or better is MUCH better,,, not saying driving a post wont work I just will not ever used a pointed post with the point in the ground, they came back when I pitched a fit the second day when the posts fell over with the gates weight on them and dug around them and poured some redi-mix around them
