12 volt conversion questions

i am working on converting a ferguson 35 to 12 volt. someone already started on the project and put a 12 volt coil on it. is this ok with the normal points? is there a difference in 6 or 12 volt points? would a 6 volt coil with a resistor in line be better? thanks for any help

Points and condenser are the same for 6 or 12 volt.

As for the coil, you can run any coil or coil/resistor combination as long as the resistance across the + and - terminal, including the resistor, equals to about 3 ohms resistance.

Some 12 volt coils require a resistor, some don't. Unless you know the part number and can get the specs on it, you will have to check the resistance to determine if it needs a resistor.

The points and condenser together make up a pretty simple switch. Those switches don't care if the they are 6, 12, 14 volt!

They will work fine. The points and condensor don't care if it's 6 or 12 volts. The coil does care, but you already have a 12 volt coil. Just make sure that you connect the polarity to match your ground system. If you are putting an alternator on, it will likely be Negative ground. If your ammeter reads backwards and it bothers you, just reverse the leads on the ammeter.
