Permatran Oil

I'm going to be changing the trans/hydraulic oil on a MF1726E compact tractor.

The book calls for AGCO Prematran II oil. I'm not finding any info on Prematran II. I see Permatran III, and Permatran 821XL.

I haven't priced it from AGCO, don't know what would substitute for it...

Anyone know what it is? Or should I just get it from AGCO? It is still under warranty, don't want to do anything wrong, but don't want to spend more than necessary.

Thanks!

Just a guess..........as I recall, back in the day, AC's hyd/trans fluid was "power fluid 821". Given that you're dealing with Agco, and 821 shows up, I'm guessing it's nothing special.

why not just get the info from the agco dealer? i would trust what they say about the oils , and to see which oils meet the original spec's. and that prematran II may be upgraded to the III or 821XL ? as a newer oil shouldnt go backwards, as it should exceed the current oil in use.

The usual advise when checking for correct oil is to compare the specs on the container. Oils have very specific service specs. A smart azz at the dealer could tell you "go ahead and get that cheap (same spec) oil from them, we will be happy to repair the damage"

Perma-tran 821xl is the most recent formulation of it. Before that was Perma-tran III, and before that Perma-tran II. lately we've been using the trans/hydraulic fluid from TSC and fleet farm in our Massey 165 & 285. Works just fine. Not sure what year yours is, but the 285 was made late 70's/early 80's.

If your tractor is a hydrostat, don't scrimp on the oil or filter.

Hydrostatic transmissions are not tolerant of incorrect or dirty oil.

I buy the expensive stuff from the dealer for all of mine.

If you have something new enough to have warranty I would suggest buying the correct oil for it as in what is recommended for it. It couldn't have been cheap to buy and now you want to save a few dollars a gallon on oil?
