Went on a short road trip Sat.

Went on a short road trip and picked up a Bridgeport Series ll mill this morning. It started it's life out as a tracier mill but will be a toolroom/job shop mill as long as I own it. It has the more disirable series l variable speed head on it. Unloaded it at my friends shop as where I want to put it in mine is still dirt. Was to good of a deal to pass up.

Wow. I have never seen a head mount like that. I'm looking at it and can't even figure out how it works. Does the head slide manually then have to be locked in place to work or does it slide while operating?

The machines I've seen, the head doesn't move on the slide. I guess it could be ok, but it would be hard to move, very top heavy. CNC replaced these mills. Most likely from a mold shop or pattern shop. Parts might be very hard to find.

The answer to that is very carefully.

A heavy forklift lifting up high seems to work best. I wouldn't try it from the bottom.
