Changed spark plugs today

I have owned my tractor for about a year now and decided to change plugs this morning. I couldn't believe it ran as well as it does after looking at the first plug. Completely carboned over. I broke some carbon off and took some pictures

When you get a photo to load we can take a look. New tractor, high
use, old and beat? Let use see if maybe you just have the carb set a
little rich. Get back to us.

finally got one to load. 544 hydro gas engine. Tach read 2500 hours when I got it but tach wasn't working. Tach now works and I have put on about 50 hours. Sorry for all the posts but I could get pictures on or able to edit any post.

I now run the hottest spark plugs I can in my old gas engines. They maintain the correct color. I don't baby them, but they're not out plowing all day like they used to be either.

Agreed. If you are gutting out the engine with heavy tillage I would avoid a hotter plug but with the light use most older gas tractors see I would definitely go with a hotter plug. Especially with the way those plugs look.

Is there a possible leak between the air filter and carb? The deposits lead me to believe unfiltered air is a possibility. Gas and small amounts of oil getting passed the rings on a cold plug could leave the same deposits. I have also heard grumblings about modern Champion plugs going bad inside of a season. Perhaps a quality control issue?

Just throwing darts in the dark,
Aaron

Plug on the left came out of a cylinder that is getting oil in it,
Rings or valve/valve seals.
That plug is also newer looking than the other three making me think someone has been often changing the plug in the bad cylinder as a bandaid solution.
Champion plugs in my experience do not work well in an engine using oil, quit firing much sooner than other brands.
Flood an engine once with Champion plugs and you will be replacing a few, other brands seem to be more forgiving.

Yeah , that happens. Doesn't always mean the engine is shot, maybe takes a little oil but can still run good and be
usable with no problem.

I did notice that the number one plug was newer and that's the one all fouled up. I think it's an oil burning issue with that front cylinder.

One of the biggest problems is the brand of plug. Champs now days are junk. I use NGK plugs now days since the champs and auto lite plugs are junk now days

I'd adjust the valves and then do a compression check. Your mixture is OK based on the two non fouled plugs.

Same way every thing else does. H-F stays in business but many of there things are junk. Now days many things are bad from the get go and many people have been buying the same brands for years and they do not see that the brand in no long what they once where.

Sort of like a bumper sticker I saw not long ago in a Newer Chev pickup that said do not fly my flag on your Jap car. When the Jap car I drive was made in the U.S.A but that Chev is not made in the U.S.A.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think at this point with my lack of mechanical ability I will try a hotter plug. I have no doubt something is going on in that one cylinder but this tractor just moves a few round bales and some garden tillage etc not much hard field use.

Wouldn't make any difference what brand of plug is or was in the cylinder the first plug came from.Hotter plug wouldn't help much either.
