Replacing sodium dusk to dawn - John T and other EEs

175 watt sodium vapor has bit the dust. New sensor and bulb didn't fix it. So rather than fuss, think time for replacement. Checking on-line in home improvement stores doesn't look like direct replacements are available. CFL/flourescent are not an option here in the frigid north.

Which brings us to LEDs. They don't show watts drawn by LED fixtures. How do they rate them, and how do I find one that won't be a disappointment? Really need lots of light in that barnyard.

Last year I bought two LED "security" lights at Lowes. $100.00 each. Same price now. Haven't gone down but will.

IIRC, they use 40 watts, are instant on, and produce lots of light.

Plan to buy another for my other barn that currently has a 40 (60?) watt metal halide, but waiting for the price to go down.

I have had a metal halide light working here since Feb 1994. I replaced the bulb about 3 years ago not because the old one was bad I just thought it might be weak.400 watt.

I like the 42 watt LED fixtures personally. However, while they are very bright I feel they do not light up as large of a radius as the one you will be replacing. This may or may not be an issue for you. There is usually a chart on the side of the box that will tell you how many lumens, watts drawn, color of light, and projected lifespan. LED's are the future of lighting for many applications, they sure aren't perfect but for example a light advertised to last 100,000 hours running on average 12 hours a day will last 22 years if it is as advertised.

I switched from MV several years ago when the Neon (Fluorescent) lamps became available. I am very pleased with their initial price, low wattage consumption and luminous performance. They too are instant on. Only very minor peculiarity is that being neon gas it has to get warm before it emits 100%. No biggie, faster than MV. I can light up a whole area for less than one MV cost me.

Local auctioneer must've bought a semi trailer load of LED parking lot light fixtures. He has a pallet of them at every auction, and tries to sell a few. They typically sell for about $60-70 each, sometimes less.

I wouldn't call that expensive.
