Snake sightings

Was out doing my morning walk on the local rail-to-trail. Came upon a 20-24 inch coral snake. Just sitting there on the pavement, minding it's own business. Sadly I did not have my camera handy. I did call it into the office that manages the trail to let them know where I saw it. They use prisoner labor to maintain the trail, and it would not be a fun way to go. While I was calling it in, the snake slid off into the grass and weeds. Gorgeous snake, and not threatening at all.

Copperheads are what I have to watch out for. But I saw a huge Garter snake this summer, must have been almost 3 inches fat in middle.

The 4 kinds of snakes I don't like: big ones, little ones, live ones and dead ones.

Lots of little snakes on the rock roads, seen while we were walking. Species unknown. Cold weather must be coming. I don't like any
either!

At our County Commissioner's meeting this morning, the gal that sits beside me said the other evening she was watching TV and fluffed a blanket that was on the sofa beside her. A large garter snake crawled out.

She recently bought and remodeled the house, so there must have been a time when the house was not too secure. I asked her if she killed the snake. She replied she just threw it out the front door. (This is a gal that grew up in the Nebraska Sandhills killing rattlesnakes with a hoe).

Snakes are like most animals and some people, if they are left alone they will just 'go the other way'. 8)

Yesterday morning I saw a garter snake when I was on the basement throne. I caught it and tossed it out on the lawn. It probably has found its way back on by now.

I can remember a couple years ago that the tomcat would sit and growl at the one flower bush. This went on for a few weeks then one afternoon I saw a small snake with an ugly head sunning itself by the ash tree with the cat no longer watching the flowers. I miss the cat as he passed a year later and the snake was never seen again after the sighting under the tree. We are pretty lucky that we do not have any of the nasty snakes nearby that I know of although some of the snakes down by the creek get pretty big for my comfort.

Been hauling hay home from down on the reservation, last few days. I have seen on average 6 a day. I lost 3 baby
calves this summer to snake bites in that pasture so any that cant move fast enough get flattened. I cant tell from the
cab what they are but I havent seen any that look like black snakes. I'd try to miss those. All I've seen are multi
colored so most are toast now. :{)

and they're pretty mild mannered. Kids have been found playing with them because they admired the pretty colors. Yet they didn't bite the kids. My luck, they'd bite me.

I came across a Green Mohave today while painting my shop. He was between the shop and the opened door. I went to close the door and there he was. He was 3' long and had 11 buttons on his rattle.
There was a shovel about 3 feet away so deprived him of his head. Will make a nice hate band. That is the one snake you don't want to get tagged by. One of toughs killed my neighbors horse.
I'd add a pic but I still trying to figure how to do that from my phone.

Venomous snakes are easy to identify, and I'll leave them alone in the wild, but too close to the house and they get dispatched, too dangerous for me to worry about relocating. Good snakes get a free pass from me as long as swmbo, or the dogs don't see them.
