Steering Question

I have a 706 gas. When I first start it after sitting for a while the steering will not work. The steering will work after a couple of minutes. If I shut the tractor down and start up a little latter the steering will not work immediately but will start to work quicker than a longer shut down. I have heard if you put extra Hydraulic fluid in the tractor, the problem can be cured. I have a new filter in the Hydraulic system. Any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks

There is an Oring in the suction side of the MCV pump that fails. Extra 5 gallons covers the Oring. The fix requires serious effort. 5 gallons of Hytran is a cheap repair, and hurts nothing. if it fixes it you are in business, if not more texts are in order. Jim

On the extra fluid fix, I had a JD that responded to that. Apparently I had a mechanical problem causing it, but considering the alternatives, I took the short cut. Yes additional fluid could have tested my wheel seals which it may have but didn't result in leakage.

I believe that is why IH added the supercharge line to the later models, to help prime things up faster, but to be sure, you'd have to ask someone like Pete23, or someone smarter than me

The extra five gallons does more than cover that o ring in the split. It raises the oil level in the suction passage to mcv pump in the speed transmission housing which reduces drain back when shut down.

As far as super charge line on 86 series, the main reason was to reduce flow through the filter because they went to a 12 gal pump in mcv which would increase cavitation. It does indeed help prime that mcv pump though.

Sounds like the pump on the back of the MCV is going. You can try the higher oil level. Doubt it will solve your problem though. I have not had that much success with that band-aid fix. If it is not priming when it is started it is going.
