6V battery height

Is there a low top version of the group 1 6V battery?
A group 1 fits in the battery box on my Farmall Cub
perfectly, but it is too tall for the lid to go on. The
lid literally sits on the battery posts instead of the
battery box so I need to find something shorter.

I could go 12V Ray, but I'd rather not.
I just bought brand new 6V lights for it.
Here's a picture of the battery box with a G1 in it.
Front and top removed of course since the top won't fit.
Hard to tell in this picture but the posts are actually
taller than the box is.

I had the same thing on my Cub. I added 4 small blocks of hardwood ,1 on each corner of the
battery to make the lid fit. Each block was about an 1/8 inch higher than the battery post

Do you have the correct top. And could you put a taller top on? A person I know is in the business of making new battery boxes for different tractors. I am almost sure that he could make a top that would fit with your battery.

I was looking for the dimensions on the Optima batteries, never could get an exact measurement, as to if the posts were included, but 7 13/16" comes up. I think that is a little shorter than a group 1.

Battery box is new aftermarket Leroy. It all came together.
That doesn't mean it's right. Only that it came as a unit.
The way the top is made, it is just a rectangle with lips.
It sets right down over the box and clamps on.
Without a battery in it, nothing holds it up except the
sides of the box. With the battery in, it sets on the posts.

If that includes the posts Steve, that is significantly shorter.
Almost an inch. I'll take a look at them and see.

That might work Ivan. Maybe I can take some hard rubber,
cut a notch in it and slip it over the box sides to hold the top up.
If the top will clear it on the outside. It would be tight.
The front of the box will flex a bit but the rear is in question.

I have that problem with my AC B. I made a piece of masonite to cover the top of the battery with clearance holes for the battery
caps. Also had a new top bent up with wider lips. Works great. DO NOT RISK SHORTING OUT THE BATTERY unless you want a new barn.

Before everyone goes any further. I run my CUB with a garden tractor
battery. Just buy the one that is the max amp output somewere in the
300+amp range. NOW if you are running a 6 volt system go to Interstate
battery and buy an Optima six volt. Have one in my dads 6 volt Chevy
truck and cranks her over no swet. They are not cheep but will fit
anything and they can be upside down, on their side, any old way. They
also have really big brass Ba,,,,,,! For crank power. I know th3 guy
who runs the local Interstate warehouse and can get some good deals
now and then. I just love the Optima batteries!

I think that the original cub battery box lids had three hard rubber discs that were bonded to the lid and were spaced to sit on top of the battery caps. We have one around here somewhere. Will try to make a picture.

Some MM tractors need a short battery, they say one for an old VW bug fits and is available at the
auto parts store. I haven't tried it, I was able to get a short Interstate 6v but I bet the VW one
is cheaper. Good Luck

Look at a VW Beetle 1965 , should be BCI group size 19L and shorter than group 1 .
they fit under the rear seat. NAPA shows them . Np guarantees. Napa # 7217L.

My Allis B came from the factory in 1948 with a piece of Masonite on top of the battery with
three holes in it for the caps. The aftermarket battery box for my Farmall H also had that
problem. I used couple of layers of sheet rubber and then a piece of masonite. Four years, no
problems.

Change the ground cable to chassis ground that pint and lite sheet metal will not be a good ground for that system.

I do not know how the clearance is on the tractor for using a taller box but I am sure that friend could custom make a taller box for that and if everybody is having problems with to short of boxes then it might be something he would add to his line of boxes he sells. My cub battery box lid has a piece of rubber about 1/4 ion thick and I just fasten it down as best I can.

Be careful if you use rubber or something, do not put over fill plugs . If the get sealed the battery will build pressure and then bad things happen with battery acid.

Same problem with my cubs. Haven't found a shorter version. I cut small blocks of wood and placed them on top of the battery. The lid sits down on the wood giving me about 1/4" of space between the terminals and the lid. Since the lid/top has the sides that roll over the box itself you it still covers and looks as though it is in its proper place.

Thanks for all the ideas guys.
I ended up getting a group 19L battery.
It fits in there nicely and should work out fine.
