Lucky I guess

I'm stripping and cleaning the '54 NAA I got in June getting ready for paint. It had a heavy coat of orangish red that looked brush painted. After the second application
of stripper and a good power washing I noticed water still dripping off the motor after most of the rest of the tractor was dry. Now is the time to discover a leaking
freeze plug (that's what we all them here). AND it wasn't the one at the back of the motor. Minor bump in the road.

Probably some are, but tearing it down to prove it isn't very reasonable. I would look at the one I take out to see if the rusting was from the inside or the outside. It is pretty easy to check that. and if from the inside, I would use a rust inhibitor additive on top of new Coolant with distilled water. Jim

Well Ford was better than IH. I bought a nice 656 gas with a loader and set it in the shop overnite to work on it. The next morning had a puddle that I assumed was a water pump. You can't see much on a utility with a 2000 loader. Tore it down and found a rusted thru frost plug that sets half way behind the plate for the front timing cover. So I am probaly going to have to pull the cam shaft to remove the plate to replace the freeze plug. The last person knew it was bad because they had it all smeered up with silicon:( Why did IH even put one there when they have another on the side of the block? I knew better than buying a red tractor but did it anyway because it was cheap.LOL Tom

Bob, thanks for the thought. Now it won't just be clowns under the bed to worry about when I go to sleep tonight. Kidding. The first thing I did was inspect the others, especially that back one. They don't show any signs of external corrosion. The leaking one did. I will use a corrosion inhibitor when I'm up and running again. Thanks y'all.

I cleaned / stripped / blasted / scraped my Farmlll H several years ago, and no sooner than the water jacket cover plate began leaking, seeping. I did not want to try to remove the 60-year old bolts, I'd just snap them off. During the re-paint I just put on 3 or 4 heavy coats of paint over the top of the gasket area of the water jacket cover.... let it soak in .... hasn't leaked yet.

Those "holes" were designed for access to remove the casting sand from the block after it had cooled at the foundry. The foundry engineer had no idea what was going to be hung on the outside of the block, nor where auxiliary equipment was going to be mounted. The company probably had lots of different applications for that engine, with different auxiliary equipment.

yeah David. after all it's just a Ford. you're getting some good haying weather but looks like the humidity is coming back.

A little stop leak it will be good for another 10 years. You want to talk about luck. I stopped to take a leak one time. I look down and see my oil filter leaking oil. Stan

Has been great weather. We finished baling Monday, unless we get some more calls. Now back to the trim on the new place. Good luck with your project, you got some interesting tips.
