Removing Ford Injector Pump

I've tried several things with my backhoe, and now it refuses to start. I can't find a problem anywhere. A buddy has asked me to drop off another injector pump from his tractor in another town on my way through this weekend, and I am thinking about just taking my pump off and having them at least go through it? What do you guys think? How do I remove one of those pumps from my backhoe? It is a Ford 4400. It has a loader on it, so, I don't have a lot of working room, and I know nothing about injector pumps. What do I need to do to not mess with the timing or whatever? Thanks! Bryce

They are pretty simple Bryce.
Disconnect the battery.
Remove the injector lines completely from the tractor. Remove the fuel lines and return line from the pump.
Remove the small cover on the front of the timing cover.
Inside are 3 bolts that hold the gear on the pump shaft. Remove those.
Now remove the 3 bolts that hold the pump on the engine. The back one requires the right combo of extensions and swivel socket. Remove that one first.
Then pull the pump.
The timing gear is held captive in the timing cover and can not skip time.
The gear is also indexed to the pump shaft with a pin - can not skip time.
Reassemble in reverse order.
When you have it back on set the pump so the line is about 1/2 line down from zero as in the photo.

Jerry has most of the procedure laid out for you. I did this on my 3600 a few years back and RodinNS had posted to me a quick write-up on the procedure over on the Ford board that you might be able to find with the Search function. I'm at work now or I would see if I could find it. About the only thing I would add to Jerry's note is that you are probably going to need the timing cover gasket on hand to reassemble. I suppose you might get lucky and salvage the old one, but mine tore all to pieces when I took it off.
