Planting Rye

I want to plant Rye as cover crop on CRP ground that will be restored in the spring.

How many pounds per acre?

Is it annual or perennial that will not regrow?

There is cereal rye and grass rye.

Cereal rye is very winter hardy.

Rye grass comes in different forms I believe? Most won't overwinter up here in MN.

What are you going to seed after the rye. Rye has an aleopathic (sp?) effect that will make it difficult for some to grow following rye. It is a bit like natural herbicide. If you are seeding to some small seeded things to re-establish CRP (clovers, alfalfa, some grasses) then rye can be trouble. If you don't want it to overwinter, oats would work. If you want it green in the spring, I'd go with wheat or winter triticale instead of rye. Somewhere between 1 bushel and 2 bushel per acre is acceptable for any of them for cover.

I've used both and like the other post depends on what you want to do next spring. I had rye one year in the spring disc and worked it good and planted oats and alfalfa it worked but I had to make forage out of it because the rye came back. Next time I planted oats and that worked better it died off and made a nice seed bed. Side bonus I didn't have to work the ground and save the moisture.

If your planting Rye grain then about 1 1/2 bushels per acre, about 84 lbs. per acre. This is thick enough for cover crop. IF your going to green chop it then we always plant 2 bushels per acre.

Also the Rye you plant this fall will grow a lot come spring. It will need to be sprayed or plowed under to kill it come spring. It will not die off until it is mature next July.

If you are wanting some thing easier to kill off next spring I would plant winter wheat. It is much easier to kill. Plant 2 bushels per acre if broadcast 1 1/2 if drilled.

If you had been a little earlier Oat work the best. They will grow up to a foot tall in the fall and then winter kill. It is too late for oats now. mid Sept is about the best.

We parked our platform carts on our neighbor to cut beans 2 days ago. They had taken out some orn early and now have rye that is about 3-4 inches tall. They have confinment cows that will probably get this next spring before they plant beans there.

Yes it is readily available. Wheat can be planted up to election day. You local seed supplier should have seed wheat.

I know Welter's Seed at Onslow would have it (1-800-470-3325 or 1-800-728-8450). For cover crop you just need bin run wheat not certified.
