Strange humming noise by rear of truck like a struggling whine. I can only guess my in tank fuel pump is about to fail? { 2002]

Try to get an ear close to fuel tank and trigger ignition to run pump without starting engine. May need a computer to do this.
 
SWAG: Wouldn't the fuel pump start as soon as the ignition was switched to on? I guess when the rail pressure reaches 40# (?) there is a shut off switch for the pump??????? Why wouldn't that work if you are quick with your ear?????
 
The pump will whine pretty good if the fuel filter is getting plugged up.

If it is the pump then not a big deal to drop the tank, another option you can find measurements and photos for on the internet, is to cut a small access door under the drivers side rear seat.
Once done then changing the pump is a half hour job.
